ParticipantI have a job at a local hairdressers repairing their Whirlpool american tumble dryer. Model is 3RLER5437JQO. After excessive use, the machine just cuts out. We have changed all the 3 thermostats which are visable when the front panel is removed, and it’s still the same. However, on my last visit to this machin, I noticed that the motor was very hot. Im suspecting that the motor may be faulty causing an internal TOC in the winding to open up perhaps. Machine starts to work again when it cools down. Any feedback appriciated as to whether im barking up the right tree or not.
Thank you.May 31, 2006 at 6:40 pm #178030eastlmark

Assuming of course that the vents are clear you may be right. pretty simple machine so not a great deal can go wrong. These machines need a wide vent outlet, if a Euro style vent hose has been squeezed on it may cause a problem.

Hi 🙂
I’ve had a problem with one of these cutting out and it turned out to be the starting device on the motor this would cut out after bit and would not start.I removed it and cleaned the contacts up and it worked until I got a new complete motor which came with the device on it 🙂

It depends on what you call excessive use.
These are heavy duty domestic not designed for constant use.
I know that Whirlpool dont like them in places like nursing homes and they have a formula for the number of beds to dryers in these places and if there aren’t enough machines the warranty is not honoured.
I’ve seen these machines in hairdressers too and they run them non stop
so the motor will run hot and cut out.
Venting is also important the installation should be as straight and as short as possible.
But nobody reads installation instructions do they? 😉Steve

Dont know where you got that snippet from. I have worked on these for Whirlpool for the last 10 years and find that 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the american washers and dryers are in nursing homes and hairdressers, my company probably does 20 or so a week.
I have also never seen or heard of the formula you are talking about. The most common cause is what Steve said above about venting, these appliances need a 5″ metal vent hose and I see them installed with 4″ domestic type hoses all the time,
So if it has a 5″ metal hose and the stats have been changed I would check the airflow. If it is poor look at the dryer fan, take the fan cover off and spin the fan, if the fan spins and the motor is still, the bush in the centre of the fan has come loose.
John
PS
Just a thought, they are allowing the dryer to complete the cooldown cycle, if not and the dryer is in constant use all day it will cause the same problem.

I have 😉
When I was a Whirlpool service partner there was an unwritten policy that Whirlpool had on how many persons habitated a property before the (then new to them) semi-commercial appliance would be guaranteed for. Reduced to three months quite often for larger nursing homes/B&B’s etc.

Hi John
I’ve been out of the loop with Whirlpool on a direct basis for a while now (thankfully) but the question of over use was an issue in recent times and may have been dropped now for commercial reasons.
I did have something in print but it went through the shredder a long time ago along with everything else. 😀 😀 😀Regards
Steve
