apart from people who want some techno device this wont fly in the mass market. Majority just want to shove their clothes in , detergent select program and start. messing around is not what they want and most people would say, errr sounds expenive when it goes wrong. ‘over engineering’ its a washing machine after all.

Exactly Jeremy, pity manufacturers cant focus their efforts to produce machines with a reasonable lifespan built from quality components.
But then there’s probably no money in that, better to fleece the easily impressed with this sort of guff I guess :rolls:

Now what would be useful is if we, the engineer, could log in to an appliance and access it’s recorded error messages. Would cut out some of the misinformation customers give us.

I’m sure I got stuck with a bloke like that at a party once. A harrowing experience.
Anyway, I managed to watch a couple of minutes of it and I thought I heard him say something to the effect of, “avoids the mixing of coloured and white garments.”
That’s going to lead to a few odd call outs.
“The bloody thing just sits there flashing and won’t take in water.”
“Ah have you been trying to do a mixed wash? I’m sorry this machine…..” 😆

Okay, call me cynical, not my name of course but, all the same…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/c … 703678.stm

Watch it first, then think to yourself, why would anyone pay for a fridge (or whatever) only to be locked into a pre-defined set of services that are limited to that particular brand? What happens if it all goes South and the services stop?

And, I could come up with a heap more questions. But I think I should let the muppets that come up with this stuff figure it out for themselves.

In short, unless the devices are supported by multiple retailers (for food and stuff) and are not tied to subscriptions, it’s probably gonna crash and burn. But then, that’s if the retailer even bother keeping such services alive due to slow/poor take up.

Like a lot of things, the technology might be there to do it but the world isn’t ready to adopt it.

According to the clip, it’s inspired by the fact that US cosumers chuck out 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the grub they buy because it got lost in the big chock a block fridge. Seems a complicated way to go about solving such a problem. Would have thought the consumers would be learning to manage stuff better by now what with the recession.
They obviously never heard the expression, “Keep it simple, stupid.”
I like the drawer loading fridge shown in the vid. Saves the cold air falling out every time you open the door. Been waiting for that to happen.

    Re: And the point is…

Anyone in the “developed” world chucks out that amount or more. We’re so advanced we can grow and, more pertinently buy, more than we can actually eat. Well, those of us that aren’t clinically obese at least or otherwise afflicted.

It’s got (IMO) sod all to do with expiration dates, other than they are often wrong and geared to selling more by supermarkets and a lot more to do with laziness or good old forgetfulness.

But, to avoid a huge debate on consumer buying and consumption habits…

The drawer fridge is great, commercial kitchens have had them for a while now and, in that environment, they’re great.

They get opened and closed a lot so the escape of chilled air is a factor in consumption and (more so) in maintaining a stable temperature. But that’s not really the case in a domestic situation.

But food keeps longer, more stable temperature you see. But then, we throw the stuff out anyways due to the above, not the fact that we don’t know it’s up or, going to be.

But on a drawer type design aren’t people going to see the stuff on top and be too lazy to dig down and use the stuff at the bottom? Well, given the above I’d have to assume that, yes, they truly will be that lazy. Proof positive in the fact they don’t use the food when it’s staring them in the face, even if from behind a carton or two of Cravendale’s finest.

You don’t have that problem in a commercial installation, the turnover of food in the fridge or freezer is much, much higher.

A bar code scanner that won’t be bothered with after the first month (at best) of ownership solves what exactly?

If people can’t be bothered to look see what’s in the damn fridge or freezer are they seriously going to scan stuff in and out of it every time they go near it?

    I think not.

As you say Mike, keep it simple, keep it stupid.

    Re: And the point is…

Laziness. Yes, well the thing is we’ve got the health police telling us we should eat five a day so you do your best down the market to pick up loads of lovely fresh veg with all good intentions. But when you get home from work you don’t have the energy to cook, you’re hungry now, so the fresh veg gets neglected until it’s no longer fresh, out come the microwave pizza and chips from the freezer and the health police can go hang. What do they know, anyway?

Hmm. Now there’s an idea. It would go nicely between the TV and the DVD plyer.
