Eee by eck, thi don’t meck em like thi used ter.

It seems to be my week for these ‘blasts from the past’ 🙂

Just been to a purple Hotpoint 1848 date code 16. By my reckoning that is April 1979, so it is into its 27th year.

Old bloke, now on his own, tells me, ” I do exactly what the wife told me on her deathbed :eeek: . I turn it to Number 5, pull out the knob and away it goes.” I’ve heard tales of many ‘famous last words’ but that takes some beating, although in its own way quite touching.

Tells me that it is now making a hissing noise.

I switch it on and can tell at once that the belt is adrift, the hissing noise was the motor turning without the belt on.
I take of the back expecting to find that the bearings are goosed, also that the backplate will be rotten.

The belt had come off because the front motor mounting bolt had come loose.
Refitted the nut & bolt, fitted and tensioned the belt and away it went.
The backplate is as clean as a whistle, not a hint off white corrosion marks. The pump, motor, backplate, timer, module etc are all original. The only things that have been changed since new are the door seal and a set of brushes.

In fact the only thing wrong with it is that bloody awful colour. 😀

You should add this to the Merloni thread to further depress new Hotpoint owners.

    😀

😥 reckon you’re just an old softie at heart Jim 😥

Mind you i did feel a certain tightening of the throat and a sting in my eyes when I read your touching tale 😉

    Andy 🙂

PS. Personally I always liked the purple – mauve – bordering on pink colour scheme on these machines and I suspect this is where Mr Dyson got his inspiration 💡 – but I could be wrong! 😉

If I remember correctly, the official description of the colour was amethyst 😉
