A customer of mine rang me to ask how much I would charge for new springs for their Hotpoint washer. Told them the call out fee plus parts and gave him the price.

He decided to try the free call out engineer who came and says needs new springs and it gonna costs £60 for the labour plus £40 for the parts one spring not two. He asked for £60 upfront before getting the part. 3 weeks later he still has not returned.

Hence the reason why I was called. I do have the springs in my van and they could have the machine repaired in matter of few hours for half of the price for two springs.

It makes my blood boils that someone like him gave domestic appliance repair a bad name.

The owner was planning to replace the machine anyway but it is shocking!

The worse thing is that he advertises next to my advert in the local advertiser. I feel like giving the advertiser a call saying that this guy is ripping people off. But what can you do?

The guy insisted to be paid in cash but not cheque, surely the owner should have smelt a rat. No proof of payment was made. Anyway, the wife was not very happy with him and blames her husband for not calling me to do the job as she wanted me to do it.

In some degree, I find it quite comforting that I charge people a reasonable fee and takes cheques as payments knowing that the other guy wants cash.
