ParticipantSure I read something about this a while ago, but it came up in discussion with a couple of the Manufacturer engineers I meet with.
Evidently the Goverment are to impliment 3 levels of NVQs for service engineers, level 3 for brown goods, levels 1 & 2 for us lot.
Apparently these are available now for those who want to take them but in any case within five years it will be mandatory for everyone.
A two hour written examine with a full portfolio of work to pass ?
Anyone not holding the relevant qualifcation cannot work and those that do would be breaking the proposed change in the law. Not to mention that should one not hold the qualification Public Liablity Insurance could not be carried. Lots of implications all round me thinks.Personally I would have no problem doing this and surely if it works as same as corgi it will flush the cowboys out.
Whats the general understanding of this ?

KeymasterThey are available, if you can find a college running the course, I think there’s one is South Wales.
They are not nor, that I am aware of, to become mandatory as there is currently nothing in the wind on that front bar rumour and speculation.
Body of work has to be proved = expensive.
No proposed change in law to my knowledge. And, anything as Draconian as that would likely be kicked into touch swiftly.
CORGI didn’t get rid of the cowboys, just made them harder to find. 😉

I just completed a domestic appliance and pat testing course last december.
It was at Queen elisabeths training collage in leatherhead.
I got 2 city&guilds certificates.
One was a level3 certificate in inspection @ testing of electrical equipment.
The other a level3 certificate in management of electrical equipment maintenance.
I also gained several in house certificates in domestic appliance servicing and repair.
Good collage, great experiance.October 23, 2007 at 8:24 pm #231372richardable
