    In true Watergate fashion…

    Front page article

And AMDEA think they’ll get a scrappage scheme to encourage people to switch to more “energy efficient” appliances? 😉

Well you can’t blame any trade association for trying to do it’s very best toward it’s membership now can you.

AMDEA wrote:The Time to Change programme aims to promote energy efficiency in UK households by encouraging the replacement of the estimated 15.4 million outdated domestic appliances still in use in UK homes. The front page article proves to some extent that the manufacturers can easily rubbish any independent report on their product by, as in this instance, stating the products tested are ‘discontinued’….nice one! That then leads them on nicely to encourage the government for funding toward a scrappage scheme for appliances that fail DEFRA tests….brilliant!

‘He who pays the piper’ as they say. 🙂

Failing on spin! Is this because theyre not spinning fast enough(i.e. the manufacturers are telling porkies) or because as I suspect the water can’t get away fast enough because the outlet is the same size as their base model (1000 rpm) the water is just whirling around at 1600 rpm.Manufacturers just think they can add a faster motor plus fancy electronics to get better results.I wonder if anybody has tested results with or without the non return ball – I sometimes remove these if they are emptying into a ‘proper’ waste pipe.

Probably running too slow or not tested with that motor/drum combo. The pump and drain should cope fine, what would be measured is the volume of water extracted I’d expect and the drain side shouldn’t affect that much if at all.

The “eco-ball” as they are known are an incredibly simple, pretty much effective and mostly reliable cheat to cut down on detergent and heating. The detergent bit is definitely debatable but that’s how it’s sold.

As the machine fils the ball rises blocking the sump. The volume of water in the sump is then not heated, only the water in the drum is and, we’re told by many, because there’s less water you need less detergent.

Pity that most of the detergent went in on the first fill and straight into the sump isn’t it? But feel free to draw your own conclusions. 😉

This gets you an A rating with minimal effort and cost.

Problem is, they stick. Especially when the customer uses a lot of liquid detergent (bad thing generally) or where they wash daft things that leave sticky residues. Beyond that there’s really not much that can cause them to fail for the most part although there are the odd exceptions, most however, are use related and bog all to do with the machine itself.

Not strictly accurate. On most of the machines I have encountered the initial fill is via the cold ‘rinse’ valve, this lifts the eco ball before the power is fed to the ‘wash’ valve to flush the detergent into the drum after the eco ball has sealed off the sump. 😉

Of course if you put detergent in the prewash side as well as the main wash then that would be flushed right in, but who uses a prewash anyway.

    Re: Appliance Labelgate

The way most of them fill is to hit the primary detergent slot first off on any I’ve looked at thus far. I have looked. 😉

I haven’t looked at too many, or at least paid that much attention to it to be fair.

But the points are still valid, cheap way to get to an A rating without additional components, cost and complexity. That’s about the only reason they exist, other than to annoy the hell out of service engineers.

But let’s not wander off topic… again. 😉

RHOD GILBERT’s take on Washing Machines especially his take on “people talking bo&&ocks” (9mins 45secs into his video)…….cracks me up!

    Off topic….yes I know, sorry. 😳
