KeymasterHere’s a weird problem that I can’t easily diagnose.
The washer will spin, but only when set to the program directly (no 7) on the dial.
During a full cycle the machine turns a little while filling and then does very little. The sequencer goes round to the complete cycle but it does not spin,
A few noises, which sound like relays and sort of schuung..schunng..schuung that I can’t identify! (it sounds like a positive displacement pump, but I can’t believe that there is one there.)
It’s a bit old, I replaced the brushes about 6 months ago.
I have had a visit from the technician who has replaced the motor and pointed out a small leak in the drum-to-pump hose which he will replace when the part comes in.
It seems to me that the drum wobbles excessively too. Could it be that a damper has failed and that the thing thinks that it is overloaded?
The fabric in the lint trap rotted years ago.
That’s all the evidence i’ve got. Any advice would be welcome RogerApril 20, 2005 at 1:30 pm #132385Dave_Conway

It’s almost certainly an out of balance problem, I would wait for the engineer to return with the hose and ask his advice, after all, that’s part of the service 😀

Roger,
Can you check that model number again? There are a couple of 1146 machines, but can’t find an 1164.Ta,

Thanks for your prompt replies, what a useful forum this is!
The model number is AL 1164T.
The reason the technician was called was to fix this problem and his diagnosis was ‘faulty motor’ because ‘when the commutators are worn they can do weird things’. I wasn’t convinced, but he’s the professional….
since then my theory has developed a little.. i gave the drum a shove in the down left direction and it returned in a nicely damped way, then a shove in the down right direcion and it oscillated three or four times. So it’s fairly clear that the damper(Shock absorber if you prefer) has failed.
It looks to me as if the resonant frequency is close to the frequency of impulse the machine gets when in the washing mode and so it goes ‘out of balance’ during a normal program. When set straight to spin, however it might not stay at that low speed long enough to resonate.
Just a theory……April 21, 2005 at 9:39 am #132388admin

Yes, it could be one of the shock absorbers, this one is becoming quite a common part.
I’ve added it to the shop for you if you need one:

Thanks for your advice ant the offer to supply the part.
The repair company have taken the stance that “you’ve paid for a repair and that’s what we’ll give you”,. I can’t complain about that! It has been in their workshop for a week now and after a number of calls I’ve finally got some feedback from them. They say that the timer ring was cracked (not the problem, apparently) and that the pressure switch had stuck on one test. More tests to come, but they’ll let me know later today.
I can see how the pressure switch would prevent the spin, but I can’t see how it would prvent tumbling. I still like my shock absorber idea, but i can tell that they’re not convinced….
Any thoughts?
