The washing Machine fills up with too much water, usually to about 4 fifths of the door. It will shut off eventually. But this creates a problem in that the drain cycle is programmed to take out only so much water. When spinning starts water goes everywhere and leaks out

First remove mains electric plug from wall socket [do not rely on just switching off socket.] The likely cause is o blocked pressure ptot . First locate the pressure switch . this i s a circular object under the lid of the machine . It has several wires connected to it , and also a black rubber pipe , or possibly a clear plastic pipe . The pipe is about as thick as a pencil . Remove back pannel , and trace this pipe down to the pressure pot . This may take the form of a plastic adapter fittod in theend of a larger black hose .Carefuully extract this adapter and clean it out . Also clean out the larger pipe with a suitable rod or stick . Check the thin pipe for chafing / pinholes . You may lose some residual water from the larger hose . Protect floor . If you dont feel competant to tackle this , your local engineer on Repairs@ will do it for you at reasonable cost . Reasseble machine and test

I did as you said Neptune. seems to have cured the overfill problem. Thanks
It would appear though that the leak lies elsewhere. Only happens on drain. I felt all around the pipe from the drum to the pump and all around the pipe itself but there is no moisture. It is definitely around the front end of the machine but i think it might actually be coming from higher up. But is ther higher up that would only leak when draining and not with the drum filled.

This is a bit of a puzzle . I always say th at leaks are easier to fix than find . the common cause of leaking when pumping out is as follows .Does yhe machine drain into a vertical stand pipe ? If so a blocked or partly blocked drain will cause wter to overtop the standpipe , and run under the machine , thus fooling you . If the outlet pipe of the machine exits near th floor , direct from the pump , there is nowhere high up that can leak only whilst pumping . Another possibility is a prforated waste pipe . Place a bowl or bucket on a chair or similar ,and let the the machine pump out into that . Stop it in full flow with your thumb , and look for leaks on the waste hose . It is not impossible for a pump to leak only when working , but rare with modern pumps . Do not work on machine while it is plugged in to the mains . Good luck .

Just as a precaution , get a torch and check door rubber for holes . Some times very hard to spot

    Neptune

The full history of this machine is as follows:

Came home from work one day to find timer constantly rotating, and a drum full of water, going no where. Put machine on its side to access the pump. Removed pipe that connects drum to pump and found the obligatory sock and £1.20. Connected evrything again and since then the drum fills up with too much water (by the way that has returned) and when washing begins it comes out the washing powder drawer and I am now 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure the outlet pipe at the pump. I have cleaned the pressure pipe and the white intersection. Could the weight of the water be the cause of the leak at the pump? Also, at the top of the pressuer pipe is a white ‘gauge’, which obviously tells the inlet valves to shut off . This gauge has 3 plastic screws which a phillips head screwdriver fits nicely. Just a guess but could adjusting these have an effect on the pressure tolerance?

    Appreciate the help so far.

If you tipped the machine on its side when the water was still in, it is possible that water has made its way into the pressure switch itself. Disconnecting and a damn good shake will confirm. Under no circumstances twiddle the adjusting screws – you’ll never get them set correctly.

    Power off of course.

In addition to Penguins wise words which I heartily endorse , Check the following . Unplug machine . Completely remove the pressure hose . Fill your wash up bowl with water . Put one end of the pipe in your mouth , and hold your finger over the far end . immerse most of the hose under water and blow into it . Look for stream of bubbles leaving pipe . swap pipe around , end for end . Repeat test . Bubbles equal leak . If it leaks , replace it .

    Re: Ariston A1635

washing machine is now fixed. it was the pressure sensor at the top of the aforementioned hose. Apparently, this machine will flash its power button to give a ballpark reason as to the fault. Ariston service men like to keep this to themselves. on this occasion it was 10 flashes = pressure sensor.

    Thanks for all your help
