ParticipantI have had this machine for under 18 months.
The grey rubber seal has gone very black & gunky 🙁
I have run hot washes through the machine and the gunk will not scrub off, neither of these have made any difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions or do I have to get an engineer in to replace it?October 1, 2006 at 2:37 pm #190378indespoint

Hi bad news Im afraid. You will not be able to shift all the black gunk off door seal as it gets engrained into rubber. Best bet is to get door seal replaced and then every month do a service wash to kepp the inside of the machine clean. It builds up due to doing low temperature washes. So what you need to do is a high temp wash over 60 deg with not clothes in it. I reccomened using bleach as it will clean out the gunk you cant see and kill all the bacteria that causes this problem.

Current UKW practice recommends a monthly service wash using a quality biological detergent (green Ariel for instance) at 90c or 95c depending on your appliances available settings. Before doing this, remove and clean out the soap drawer and box (especially the roof section) and lift the pleat of the door seal and clean in there as well. If the procedure has never been carried out, you may have to do it twice to achieve a noticable benefit.
There is no evidence that bleach will enhance the process.
You will have to ge the door gasket replaced.

What does the panel think about leaving the door ajar when the machine is not in use? May be tricky with the kids about… But I’m sure it helps reduce the mildew.

Leaving the door open is good – the environment in the machine is naturally warm and humid – ideal for bacterialogical activity – the more air able to circulate through the machine the better.
Always allowing for little monsters looking for something to swing on.
