ParticipantHi all, new to the forum and hope someone can point me in the right direction.
Ariston A1636 1600 has started to leak through the detergent drawer. We had an engineer out who said it was ‘Cheap Powder’! Presumably clogging the drawer and sending water over the side. He cleaned it and left and it started again 2 washes later.
It would seem to be when the machine kicks into a rinse/spin cycle and not when it is flowing water through the detergent drawer. When the drum is full of water and it starts to spin it seems to back it up through the drawer.
It never used to do this but now does it nearly every wash. We’ve tried different wash cycles, different size loads and I even tilted the machine slightly back to ‘help’ the water away from the drawer front, all to no avail.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

This is a Hotpoint based machine with Indesit electronics in it. The most likely cause of this fault is a blockage in the sump hose under the drum leading to the pump.
Please remove the plug if you intend to have a look, or try the link in my sig to see if we have someone who can help.
Jim.
NB. Cheap powder would not in itself cause leaks, but using a good quality detergent such as Ariel is to be strongly recommended.

Erm, it shouldn’t spin with water in…….. Have you cleared out the filter recently? It’s under the kick board.

‘Ello Iadom :waving:
He’s right – this one doesn’t have the filter at the front.

Sorry, I meant spin as in rotate 🙂 Not the full on spin!
I’ll have a look at the sump hose tomorrow and report back.
Cheers all.

Definatley got to be a blockage in the sump hose not letting the water out of drum fast enough.

It is possible on these machines for items such as ‘ colour catchers’ or small handkerchiefs etc, to get into the sump. They can block the pressure chamber part of the sump whilst still allowing the machine to drain. This is why the machine can go into spin whilst it still has water in it.
It can also cause overfilling which could cause leaks on the ‘fast speed’ wash action.

Had the sump hose off, it was pretty clogged around the plastic cup thing. Nothing like a sock or anything but lots of scale and hair and fluff! Cleaned all that up, and removed as much scale as we could from the pipe.
It’s all back together at the mo and the missus is running our holiday gear through it, so it’s going to get a good workout today.
I’ll post up the results later.
Cheers all.

Well so far, 6-8 washes later, and no leaks as yet so it would seem to be cured….for the minute anyway! 🙂
Thanks for your help all, much appreciated.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. The scale you mention could be building up due to using poor quality detergents and only doing low temperature washes. You should use a good quality detergent, powder or tablet, not liquid. Try to do at least one 60° wash each week and every couple of months do a ‘maintenance wash’. This is a 95° wash without clothes, using a small amount of detergent.

Just thought I’d post a follow up for this one. Three months down the line and we haven’t had a repeat of the problem yet, so it was definately the clogging of the sump/hose that was the problem.
Thanks again all and I hope this post may be of use to someone else.
