ParticipantI have an intermittent problem with getting the door of my 2 year old machine to lock and it seems to be getting worse. Is it just a door alignment problem – I have adjusted (i.e. twisted ) the door to get it to lock but I don’t want to do this too much in case it drops off. Basically although the door is closed, when the start button is pressed the red light
just flashes and nothing happens – most annoying when you dont notice and come home to find the machine is still full of dirty washing.I haven’t opened the washer up (yet!) but I can feel (through the seal) what I assume is a spring loaded catch which engages to prevent the door being opened when the machine is in operation. I suppose there must be some other mechanical device which tells the machine that the door is closed and engages the catch when the start button is pressed.
Can anyone help ?

It is possible that the spring inside the door itself that applies pressure to the door switch via the latch is faulty. This is basically a Hotpoint machine with Indesit electronics in it, it could be much worse, it could have been 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Indesit.
This spring often fails but not usually as soon as this. Part number is 1604519. Remove the door complete with the hinge from the machine by unscrewing the hinge from the cabinet, then split the door and examine the spring, it has two long thin arms, one of these tends to break off. Failing that you may have a more serious electronic fault, I am sure that this machine is covered by a five year parts warranty, so don’t go overboard trying to fix it yourself.Jim.

Thanks for your help
I opened up the door and everything appeared to be intact. I temporarily re-attached the door inner (the bit with the hinge on) to try and see what was happening. I noticed that the vertical metal rod which acts as the catch pivot was protruding by around half an inch at the top. When I pushed this fully home again, the catch started to engage properly. Problem solved !
