ParticipantHi all, am back for more advice please.
My Ariston A1636 has become increasingly noisy on the fast spin cycle. It sounds to me like the bearings in the drum are gone. A knocking type of sound that increases with drum speed, and it’s got to the point where it’s almost too loud to use. Certainly you couldn’t use it at night and my Mrs is starting to give me ‘that look’ 🙂
Is the bearing the most likely culprit? Can it be changed on this model? If not, what else are we looking for?
Many thanks.

Yes it is the bearings, can be changed too. 😉
Downside = Tricky job and could be costly. 🙁

Is the drum smooth and quiet when you turn it by hand, if it is you may just have a loose concrete balance weight. There are two of them, both prone to coming loose. One on top of the drum and one slung at the bottom front of the outer drum.
If the drum is noisy when you turn it, then Martin’s reply stands.

Cheers guys.
Just had a quick turn of the drum by hand and it does appear to be noisy and felt notchy. Certainly not as smooth as I would have expected it to be.
Bears all the signs of a dry or shagged bearing.
So, I’m fairly competent and have a good home appliance spares shop near, is it a job I can reasonably attempt??
Many thanks

I think you may find this machine has a five year parts guarantee, worth checking it out. The Hotpoint machine it is based on is covered for parts for five years, not sure if the Ariston one does.
Not really a DIY job, bearings very hard to remove, often the front or main bearing will collapse, usually needs at least a rear drum half and possibly a drum support. The whole drum assembly needs removing completely from the cabinet.
