ParticipantOur old Ariston washing machine has developed a fault. The machine stopped when it came to drain the soapy water before the first rinse. I found a cocktail stick blocking the pump and removed it – the pump turns freely. We cannot now restart a programme even after many resets and power cycles. The display is always showing the spin symbol with a cross through it, and 0:02 on the timer. A long press on the reset switch can sometimes get it to perform a minute of pumping then count down to 0:00 and release the door lock. But the display never shows END, and a new programme can not be run – it will show the time for the programme but before it runs it will revert back to the 0:02 display, sometimes doing a power on reset as well (all segments light up for a short while). Is there another hardware fault which can create this situation? – I have checked the pressure switch and that there is no blockage in the drain pipes. My wife is keen to buy a new machine, but this machine is so nearly working that it seems to be a shame to scrap it.

Hi Dave
Thanks for rapid reply. AFAIK , I don’t need to check the pump coil – the pump works OK now – pumps out water if I pour it in through the soap container, and I can hear it operating. I am thinking it must be picking up another fault which I cant identify without a proper error message and circuit diagram. Some other posts have mentioned “f” codes, but I have just this failure to finish, with 0:02 on the timer. Then a long press on the reset button will lock the door, operate the pump again for around a minute, and count down to zero – the door unlocks around 1 minute to go. I wonder if anyone has had problems with the controller itself.

I gave up on trying to fix this fault and bought a new machine. However, I decided to salvage all useable parts from the old machine, and while doing that I found the fault, so it might be of use to other members of this forum. The drain pump is connected to the drum by a wide hose, and also a narrow hose which has a water sensor in it – almost impossible to see unless you know it is there or are taking the pump out like I was. I discovered on taking it all apart that below the water sensor the pipe went through a narrow bend before connecting to the pump. This bend was full of fluff and dirt stopping the water draining out of it and therefore giving a false indication that the drum hadn’t emptied. Too late for me, but might be good for others to check this pipe.
