ParticipantHi – I have searched the forum for this problem and read the related post but need a bit more information. As stated in the title the drum is not turning but the dial is running thorough its cycle and loading an draining at, what I would guess, are the correct stages.
I have taken the brushes off the motor but, although I have never seen brushes before I would think they are ok. They are still resting up against, is it the armature? There is about 1.5 cm showing when the brushes are removed, angles in line with the shape of the armature.
If the module may be the problem, how can I test it? I cannot afford to go replacing parts on the off-chance they might be broken like my dad suggesting I replace the brushes regardless. I have checke around for broken wires but have not spotted any.
Thanks,
Lizzie

What is the condition of the ends of the brushes, are they smooth and shiny or dark and pitted? It is not uncommon for brushes to cause this fault on these machines even when not fully worn down.

Thanks – I shall check them out – but have left them in the machine so I may get back to it tomorrow, mind, the washing pile is turning into rather a mountain!

I took the brushes into my local repair shop and he said they looked O.K. too so suggested it would be the controller board and this could cost me £60. Can anyone point me in the right direction of testing whether the contoller board is at fault please?

There is no way you can ‘test’ the module, a little bit more than £60.00 as well. Also two different modules dependant on serial number.

Have got it going again – thanks. The fuse on the controller board had gone. It looked fine but was showing high resistance. Having replace it it is going again. Shall have to see whether it blows again now.

Hi all,
I have the same model and it’s just developed the exact same fault. The fuse on the control board is OK however, and there’s no sign of anything letting the smoke out.
The comm and brushes are in good condition, although there’s not much left in them I promise to replace them if I can get it working again 😛 ).I found the control module (EM 13 SFB) on one website for 81 quid, on special order for two weeks as well so I’m not too keen to do that yet.
Does anyone have a schematic for this thing, there’s only a couple of chips and a thing that looks like an Triac on it, if I can identify them..
Also it would be nice to know if it’s this controller or the timer or something else causing the problem, is there any way to diagnose that?
Any advice greatly appreciated!

Connector looked fine, no corrosion or anything. I put it back together and it came back to life 😯
I wonder if just switching it off and on at the mains would have done the same trick.Anyway, going to treat it to a new set of brushes before I put it back to work.
Thanks!

ok when you say there is not much left of the brushes what does that mean?, they should spring out past the holders, if they are level then that may well be your only problem

like i said, and theres your answer, the connections on the pcb on that model sometimes arc and break connection, an easy repair if you know what your doing
its not the motor plug, its the copper track where it fits on the board where the problem lies!! look again and youll see what i meanMarch 16, 2008 at 9:59 am #205483evan

hotpnt: No, they are coming out “further” than where they need to to contact the comm, but only a few mm further. I have ordered a new set anyway.
helo_75: Yes, I did check the PCB edge connector and it looked perfect. As you say it could have been the problem though, if it happens again I’ll re-tin the pads.
Thanks for the help guys, this is a really useful forum, repair not replace and all that 🙂
Machine is 13 years old and this is the first problem with it, gets 2/3 cycles a week.

Hi Lizzie
A very common fault with these modules is the large resistor going open circuit , you may need to get a competent person to check this for you, if it is faulty it is possible to replace the faulty resistor . hope this helps .
