    Dear Forum

I have checked the switches by blowing into them and they seem to be mechanically sound. There doesn’t seem to be a blockage in the tubes, either. I can also here them engage as the machine fills with water, but the water flow doesn’t seem to stop. Do you think that there is still a problem with one of the switches or a wiring problem.

I’m waiting for my multi-meter to arrive; any tips would be really appreciated.

    many thanks

If you switch off the power at the beginning of the fill cycle does the water flow stop at once?

If it does then it may well be a pressure switch failure but testing the pressure switches with a meter is the only way to be sure.

    Dear Iadom

Yes it does stop as soon as I switch off the power. I thought it did that anyway. My meter has just arrived so will test switch. I notice that there are 2, one smaller that the other. It’s a 2 level washing machine so I assume that each switch is for the each of the levels. I have read that some 2 level washing machines have a “2 level” switch. Is this just the case for more recent models?

    thanks

the reason I asked if it stopped was to eliminate the possibility of the fill valves being at fault. If they stick then switching off will not stop the fill.

Its quite an old machine and there have been changes to the pressure switch system, some use a single switch, some two.

On some the second 2 level switch is an overflow switch as well as controlling the second fill level.

Most machines have used only one pressure switch for 40 years or more, some with 3 or even 4 levels in the one switch.

Quite a lot of Zanussi machines do have two pressure switches though.

    Oh, I see!
Many thanks for the information, very helpful.
That’s interesting about the second switch. Even when I set the machine to “half” load it fills to a level far higher than ever before, then the pumps kicks in to drain water. I’ll check both switches with the meter.

    thanks again

That would suggest that the 2 level switch is working, at least the safety level part anyhow so it would point to the single level switch as a possible cause.

Might be worth checking theres not a small hole in pipe to pressure switch, it would keep filling as pressure would leak from hole in pressure tubing until high level was acheived then pump should operate.

    Hi Iadom
Sorry for delay in posting but have been away for a few days.

I have done continuity test on both switches. The smaller (I assume the safety switch) is working but the bigger one isn’t as there is no break in the circuit when I blow into the switch.

    Hi Seamy

The pipes are OK as I can get both switches to work mechanically when I blow though the pipe AND I can here them clicking when I fill the machine.

Many thanks for all your help.

Sometimes giving the side of the switch a couple of sharp knocks with a screwdriver handle or similar will release the sticking contact.

This should only be done to confirm the switch is faulty as the fault will almost certainly return quite quickly.
