    Hi folks,

OK, so I know I shouldn’t have one, but I have. Now the weather’s getting worse, we’re using the tumble creaser (sorry, drier) more. That smell that I thought would go away when I’ve noticed it before is getting worse.

It’s difficult to describe – not really burning, kind of chemically i suppose, but pretty obnoxious.

It’s only six months old from Currys, so someone’s coming to look at it next week, but I’d be grateful of any opinions before then.

Also, I’d be interested what anyone thinks about the wording in Curry’s service brochure uner “Your Guarantee”. They say that before 28 days they will give you a refund but only if it’s “as new”, and if it goes wrong inside 12 months they will offer a “prompt repair service” (dosn’t say anything about it being free). Oh, and there’s one hilarious line – “The service we offer you will depend on the circumstances” – oh, THOSE circumstances…of course!

Now I’m no lawyer, but dosn’t the sale of goods act say that goods supplied must be “fit for purpose”, which presumably in the case of a washing machine dosn’t mean smelling horrible.

Although I’m not thinking of it (perhaps I should), couldn’t I just ask for a refund?

    Any thoughts gratefully received.

    Yours naively,

    David.

    Hi David,

Pretty much there’s nothing in the machine that can cause odour really although it could be fluff in the dryer chamber, it has been known but would be unusual. As a general rule odours are caused by external sources or the detergent products used by the customer, often misused I’m afraid.

As to a refund at 6 months you’ve virtually no chance I’m afraid, maybe a replacement after a long hard fight but it won’t be easy to come by.

The warranty conditions are pretty standard although Currys do offer the 28 day exchange policy, but that means it has to be out of commision for 28 days from when you report it faulty. No warranty as a general rule is all encompassing as many manufacturers will not pay for customer misuse, installations faults etc. but then if you drive your car into the garage wall the car manufacturer won’t pay for that either. 😉

Circumstance means it depends on who makes the call and their availability I should imagine, see other posts on Merloni of late. 😕

You can ask for a refund but I very much doubt you’ll get one without proof of a fault that cannot be rectified I’m afraid.

    K.

Re: Ariston AWD 12 – smelly!

Thanks for that…I’m not really that interested in getting a refund, it was just out of interest, and it may be common practice but I’m still not convinced its fair or even legal (ref. DTI web site).

Anyway, as to the smell, I would be interested to know if anyone else has come across this. It’s definately not misuse – it’s done it from new.

    Thanks again.

    David,

Not in my experience 🙁 I would suggest it a fault that needs to be checked out, meanwhile consider not using the dryer at least…just in case 😉

Ah the murky grey pool known as consumer law, oh how we all love it. 😉

Seriously though, the conditions under which a product is not considered “fit for purpose” does not mean to say that said item will not suffer some sort of mechanical or electrical breakdown, machines break it’s only the “how long” that is in question. This is why warranties are offered by the manufacturer which more or less always state “to repair or replace at the discretion of XXXXX Ltd”, note there is no “we’ll refund all your cash”. As a general rule, barring some kind of catastrophe, the best you can hope for is an exchange product which would almost certainly be the same or equivelent of what you have now.

In effect to prove the “not fit for purpose” is a bit of a chore in all honesty and then you have to weigh up the cost/time/hassle factor of actually taking it to a court.

Ah I was alluding to misuse as it is a common problem I’m afraid as people do have a strong tendancy to not read the instruction manual. Likewise many customers don’t read what to do with soap powder and fabric conditioner and that misuse can often lead to odour problems in general.

However it’s best to get it checked just in case there is a problem there, especially on the dry side and then take it from there.

Re: Ariston AWD 12 – smelly!

Thanks for replies so far –

It starts on the drying cycle and gradually gets worse as it goes on (although that may of course just be the build up in the kitchen). The smell permeates the clothes as well.

As I said, its not a waste smell – more electrical/chemical.

    Cheers.

That being the case David I would suggest you stop using it immediately and get it sorted. 😉

Don’t end up with this problem ……

    Hiya Carl again,

I subscribed but couldnt find my way back…

I tried my Drier again over the weekend. Try and turn down the heat setting nob to 0 or the star when drying. I did a dry cycle and the clothes didnt smell.

Dunno If it makes any difference to the heat.

I think the Drier Dry setting is set to hot and thats why the clothes smell awful.

Any other help would be grateful !

    Cheers

If you look up the Product number* of your appliance you can download the relevant manual here 😉
