ParticipantHi – Ariston AWD12 Margherita Washer Dryer (seen that model mentioned here a few times ..!).
It is instantly tripping the main RCD, if I leave the door open & turn it on it is fine until the door is closed …? Any ideas – door switch maybe ..?
No lights are flashing, no water enters the drawer – trips out before that all starts.
About 6 washes ago I changed the main drum bearing and seal because it was just starting to sound noisy, not taken the back off to see if it’s leaked again. It has been running fine since I changed it.
Any help much appreciated, I am fairly technical & reasonable with a multi-meter ..
Regards, Peter

Update –
Machine apart now. The replacement drum bearing & seal don’t look to have leaked. Have taken the door switch off, inside it looks fine (no blackening, etc). Did I see on another post saying there should be continuity between some of the terminals (3 in all) – cannot get continuity between any ..?
Nothing else looks amiss YET!

Another update – if I disconnect the motor ans switch it on, it does not trip the RCD/Mains out. Maybe a motor failure …? Any ideas on how to test?

Thanks helo_75
What is it that goes wrong in these motors …? The brown/red brush casing underneath is a tiny bit black where the connector goes in, other than that not much appear wrong … Is it the windings, etc i.e. can I get a local company to fix rather than order a new one? Don’t suppose the brushes would cause the RCD to trip ?
Thanks, Peter

Participantunfortunately, u can only change the brushes on these
its not common for brushes to cause earth leaks
armature and windings arent serviceable
new motor im afraid

Earthing fault, usually through the armature. If you wish to check Helo’s diagnosis, you will need a Meggar or a quality test meter.
Replacement cost of motor usually means that this is not a cost effective repair.

Just thought I’d post an update on this … not wishing to be beaten, I took the motor off, there was quite a lot of carbon around the brush housings, but the actual brushes & motor looked fine, no breakdown of the varnish on the wire, etc. I cleaned off the carbon, blew the windings out as best of could with my mouth ;-O squirted on a bit of switch cleaner, etc.
Outcome – no tripping of the RCD as yet … Not put it on a full cycle yet to fully test. Not sure how long it will last, any thoughts?
Thanks, Peter

Well done! I’d try a cycle without a load first (Service wash, perhaps? Powder and 90c) and see what happens.

Threw a load on last night, fairly long & hot wash – no problems SO FAR! Will post when it goes again. Cheers, Peter
