ParticipantHello,
First post!
We have an October 2002 Ariston Margherita 2000 AWD12 washer dryer.
A short way into a wash cycle it simply stopped, it would not re-start either the chosen programme or any other, it wont spin, drain or dry.
When a programme is selected the red light flashes briefly as usual and then stays on as it should followed by a click from the door lock though nothing else happens, there is no sign of the water intake solonoids operating, the pump running or the drum motor turning, if the dial is changed to another programme it will click around to the previously selected programme as it is supposed to do seeming to indicate that the control function is OK. If a drying programme is selected the dryer light comes on though nothing happens, the dryer light goes out when the timer is set to zero again perhaps indicating that the control function is working.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.September 22, 2008 at 5:03 pm #263075Cheddar

Fixed!
I took the motor off, brushes OK though I cleaned the commutator, no luck.
Due to lack of fault codes I reckoned that the PCB would be the next port of call, I went to take it off to look for burnt contacts etc only to find a loose connector, as I say fixed!
Searching these forums it seems that this model can be troublesome. However I can say that our machine has been hammered daily for six years, washing for a family of five and the wife has a tendancy to heavily overload it! Though the only problem prior to this has been a thrown belt caused by a rather imbalanced excess load.

Stopped working again!
Same symptoms, so I figured that the loose connector on the PCB was probably knocked by me when I took the motor out and that it was the cleaning of the commutator that solved the problem before.
So I took the motor out again and realised that one of the brushes was at its limit, I have managed to adjust the brush and it is working again thus proving that the brushes are the issue however I am not sure which are the correct ones, I think they are p/n 105214, the third ones down on this page:

Can anyone confirm?

The only way we ‘may’ be able to tell you is if you tell us what make of motor is fitted, they use a couple of different ones in production.

Hi,
It is a CESET motor.
Many thanks.

THESE are the brushes for a CESET motor.
Although there may be an error on our spares page because the picture of the one you mentioned does appear to be the correct one but when you click on the link it shows brushes for an Indesco motor. 😕
Strange, if you click on the ‘Buy Now’ link for the 105214 it shows the CESET carbons but if you click on the product details it shows the Indesco motor brushes. :rolls:
There are two main types of CESET carbons, the main differences are the size of the spade terminal and the angle of the end of the brush when viewed from above.

Links in Shop@ should now be fixed. Look closely at the picture for the 105214 and see if the angle on the end of the carbon brush is in the same direction as yours.

Hi, Thanks for your help, both 105214 and UN12101 look physically similar and the model number is not listed under either p/n. Also it is difficult to tell by the angle of the end of the carbon. In the two pics the carbon is retratced in one and extended in the other though the angle appears to go the same way on both.

The angle will be the same way on both of your brushes but it is different on the two alternatives shown in the shop@
Are the spade terminals of a normal size, approx 6.3mm in width or are they smaller, 4.6mm in width.
The one with the smaller terminal is the IN12101.

Hi Jim,
Many thanks for all of the info. Having modified the brush that was at its limit it is back together now (and currently running ok) so I will have to take it apart agin to look more closely. I might just wait until it packs up again which it surely will because I only achived about 1mm extention on the brush.
Thanks and regards.September 29, 2008 at 11:34 am #263086Phidom

Don’t try to eek out the life of the brushes as you could get sparking which can overheat the motor.

And quite often blow the electronics.
Phidom is spot on.
I would stop using it at once until you have changed the brushes.
You should be able to see which size of terminal tag is used on these brushes by looking from underneath the machine, with the plug out of course. 😉

Hi,
Thanks both, point taken though I have only moved the brush housing about 1mm, just enough for the spring to exert some force on the brush. Aside from anything else it was useful in that the fact that all worked fine afterwards confirmed that the brushes were the cause of the problem.
I will take the motor out to look at the brush type shortly however.
Regards.
