ParticipantI have had the Ariston for a couple of years and while it appears to work (cycles properly etc) the washing performance on anything less than 60degree setting is awful. Because it is not an obvious fault I am not sure what to say to any engineer. Anyone on here had similar problems or able to give me a hint as to why the performance is so bad?
Basically it doesn’t seem to wash so that anything washed 40 degrees or less simply smells and is unwearable. The water does heat during the cycle but i have noticed the clothes come out freezing cold (as well as smelling!)

Try a 90 degree wash empty of clothes or white cotton towels only with detergent to maintainance wash the machine.

Worth checking the filter as well Rob, if it’s not been done for a while (or at all!).

thanks for the reply….The filter is ok…the machine just doesn’t seem to wash very well at low temp. No obvious reason I am afraid.

Are you using liquid or powder detergents, also what brand are you using, are you in a soft or hard water area, do you use a fabric softener ?
At this time of year the clothes will be ‘freezing cold’ on all washes, the rinses are done in cold water only.

A belated thanks and reply! Live in south wales so not too hard water i think – and generally use liquid.
I have noticed that the clothes are very cold after each wash…so thanks for you confirmation re the rise cycle. I am totally at a loss what to do and think we will most likely end up just getting rid of the machine and get something else. It will lose us money but better than hanving an entire wardrobe that cant be worn!
thanks again,March 5, 2006 at 11:15 pm #164123iadom

Before you go to such drastic lengths it would be worth trying an alternative detergent. Liquids do not contain a bleaching agent and as such do not perform as well on heavy stains. Try using Ariel tablets or powder and you should see an improvement over the liquid performance.

Let us know how you go on, reading back on your first post, anything that is smelly after a sub 40° wash is just not being washed at the correct temperature with the correct dosage of a good quality detergent. Whilst all detergents contain most of the same basic ingredients, the better quality ones contain a wider variety of the various components that make up a modern detergent., for instance you need different types of enzymes for different stains.
Also if you are in a soft water area, the regular maintenance wash with a small amount of powder or tablet based detergent is essential.July 26, 2006 at 11:58 am #164126robmark

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, don’t forget to do the regular maintenance wash every couple of months, 95° wash, small amount of detergent, no clothes ( in the machine that is) 😉
