We have a problem with our 3 year old Margherita 2000, model A1234UK which keeps building up a layer of mouldy scum throughout its insides and has started to stink! My wife is going mad over it. I have tried all sorts of cleaning products and even used a hose wherever I could get at the inside.

The powder tray is kept clean and its used nearly every day

Can anyone suggest how I can clean it?

    Steve,
This is the usual grey muck I take it? This is normally caused by several years of doing 30/40c washes, combined with failure to clear the filter. The problem is exacerbated in hard water areas. I live in a soft water area, and a cheap fix is to clear the filter (under the kick panel) and boil out with a cupfull of bleach. Hard water people seem to prefer soda crystals, but the basic principle is the same in either case – make sure the filter is clear, and boil out.

In some cases, an engineer can pull the machine to pieces, high pressure water and a scrubbing brush will scour the clag off, but allow for AT LEAST 2 hours work.

The Ariston A1234 has a sealed tank assembly (great), so bleach/soda is the only option. If it kills the odour a little, do it again!

Regular hot washes from this point on will help.

    Regards,
    Penguin45.

    Re: Ariston Margherita smell

Who says the internet is’nt useful! Many thanks Penguin45 I have a 2000 the same as the person you replied to and I was just about to strip the bloody thing apart to get rid of the scum build up. The wife persists with this 40 degree wash (even though grease marks come out more prominent than they went in) maybe now I have an excuse to tell her to boil occasionally.

    Many thanks
