I have an Ariston built-in double oven, model DOV 317/1. The digital timer frequently gets stuck in automatic mode or the led time display races through the 24-hour clock and it will not respond to attempts stop or set it.

This isn’t in response to hitting any button accidentally but rather appears to happen after cooking something very hot and steamy, perhaps for a long time. I am guessing that the steam occasionally gets into the unit or the heat causes it to malfunction, or both.

When this happens the unit refuses to have its clock set and no amount of button-pressing or powering on/off will help reset it. When stuck in auto mode, it’s not possible to get it into manual mode. The faulty behaviour can vary, depending on what state it is in (minute-minder in use, not in use) at the time it acts up.

At some point – once weeks later – it will come back to life and work again for a time.

So it’s probably time to change the timer mechanism, which is a fairly expensive part but is available.

The problem is, I cannot see how to get behind the panel to the old timer. There are four screws and four knobs, which when removed allow the panel to slide left and right very slightly but I don’t want to force it open and break something.

If anyone knows if there is a trick to this oven, please advise.

Also, if anyone can even provide any comments on the general quality of the Ariston timer, theories on why this might be happening or other suggested approaches to this problem, I would be pleased to hear!

Re: Ariston oven timer – frequently malfunctions, how to cha

Firstly you will have to dis connect the power supply.
Remove oven from hosing, remove lid. remove controll knobs and facia panel, screws should then be accessible for timer unit.
