Hi lads, any tips on how to get the a#**H#le minority to pay their bills ?
They just ignore letters and short of putting a brick through their windows I dont know what else to do.

Avoid leaving invoices like the plague, I have learnt to request cash rather than cheque.

Letters are easy to ignore I would recommend going round to there house in the evening and request the cash, (try to keep it non-confontational). Say your just passing and you will come back tomorow if they like etc.

    Good luck.

Really the only way to avoid this hassle is simply to make sure you get paid on completion of the job..aint asking too much is it? :rolls:
It isnt in theory of course, but we all get the chancers dont we, REALLY winds me up, would they breeze through the checkouts in Tesco promising to send a cheque for their groceries in a week or two? 👿

I have quite a few long term customers i CAN trust to send payment if they’re not gonna be there, they in turn trust me with a key to their home, that sort of arrangement is ok IMO.. mutual trust.
If a new customer tries it on i have no problem simply removing any part i’ve fitted, suprising how often the cash miraculously appears when you start to disassemble 🙂
If its a callout only job to a blocked pump or whatever, then its not so easy, what can you do, stuff the coins & bra wire back into the pump?? :rolls:
I think we have to accept we’re always going to have a few jobs that end as total losses over the course of a year though, thats just the reality of dealing with the general public 🙁

beware of the 28 day scam too.

have had 2 customers threaten under their “rights” to a refund because an appliance was “faulty” they were due to a full refund.

hotpoint didnt help things one time by giving the customer an uplift code. OVER THE PHONE, without an engineers visit.

in this instance they buy the appliance, get you to deliver it, use it for exactly 27 days. report the problem after 27 days to you, and at the same time to manufacturer. both you the retailer and manufacturer tell them they need an engineers visit first. however they then go back to the manufacturer and bullsh!t them into giving out an exchange code because they arent happy with the service from the retailer. they then come in and demand a refund, claiming although the appliance has been used, because the manufacturer has now given them authorisation for a return the manufacturer has aknowledged appliance is faulty. customer refuses an exhange, and wont leave till received full refund, and also make a point of the “anguish” you have caused them (by not replacing it day it went wrong) immediately you get another customer in the shop as leverage to get the refund if you initially refuse.

they seem to think that because hotpoint are taking it back its not affecting the retailer. no. not the 20-30mins it takes to deliver and check its working, or the 15 minutes to pick it back up. the 2 days i didnt have stock of that model that i could have sold to someone else who i missed out on that sale to, and the fact its now water damamged because customers put it outside (i guess cos the next fool has delivered a new machine) which then causes even more friction with the distributor when youve sent it back holding up a credit whilst they speak to the manufacturer. GRRR.

    Re: Bad Payers

I had to walk out of a call for Electrolux that was leaking.

I stepped into the kitchen to a large puddle of water around the base of there w/m.

I asked have you used it this AM, no was the reply, we havent used it for 2 days.

So I asked why didn’t you mop up the water, they replied we have 5 times today and it keeps coming.

So I check the appliance, no water in it, I ask if they notice any water in the drum over night etc, no was the reply.

So I’m thinking maybe leaking tap or pipe connection.

Nope all tight, dry and new.

So I politely expalined it is not the appliance, to which they reply that I haven’t checked it properly.

So I explain that I’m oly responsible for the appliance and since they havent used it but are still mopping up water then it is obviously not the appliance at fault.

Too which they kicked off, stated they had a plumber look and he blamed the appliance.

I noticed drips along the pipes running along behind the wall and as I got them too look asked if the plumber could explain why there is water dripping off the pipes, they replied the boiler has a small leak.

I said well maybe the small leak just got bigger, they explained it hadn’t.

So I said OK I’ll do my report and goodbye, they asked what I would say as they required an uplift number which I had to provide before I left.

I was not so polite but firm and explained my report would state what I found, that the water is present when appliance is not being used and hasn’t been used for at least 24hrs.

Then they argued or rather we still trying to argue as I shut the front door behind me.

    Re: Bad Payers

    The lesson is blatantly obvious.

Make sure you know before you do any work that money is available.

    Explain the costs
(not the exact fault, beware the diy brigade)
then say “would you like me to go ahead now ?”
This usually prompts a conversation about money.

If you are still not sure, just ask again, and keep asking until you are sure the money is available.

Havnt been ripped off by a customer for years,
but was lucky enough to have been ripped off when I first started out and never forgot the lesson!

I agree 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} with all you’ve said. My policy is no money no fix, and never explain the fault, that is suicide with so many have a go heros around.
