ParticipantHi
My Hoover Performa 1100 washer/dryer (5 years old) has recently been making a very loud banging noise when on its spin cycle.
I’ve just taken the back off and peered inside with a torch.
I can see that the concrete weight that goes around the front of the drum has a BIG crack in it. It seems to be coming away from its moorings – it’s at a wierd angle, and during the spin cycle it’s banging against the front panel of the machine (causing the noise, and making a dent in the front panel).
Am I right in thinking that the machine is dead and that it’s time to buy a replacement?
Thanks for any advice.

If it is just the concrete that’s broken, it’s probably a cost effective repair. It the tub front is damaged it probably isn’t, as the mounting bolts pass through the front panel into the tub itself. Impossible to remove and a new tub and front would be required in additon to the weight.

i can recommend a good scrap yard for you 🙁
if the block has cracked then more than likely so has the tub where it is attached, or at least the brackets holding it on.
if it is just the block you may be able to get an old one from a local independat if you are very lucky and ask nicely but it is doubtful that you can easily replace it.
i hear ise washers are supposedly very good;)September 4, 2006 at 8:19 pm #187499elliot_n

Many thanks for the replies….
Given that the displaced, banging, concrete weight has put a large dent in the outer panelling of the machine – and has started to dig a hole in the concrete floor beneath the machine – I think it’s more than likely that the fixing brackets/posts have been bent right out of shape…
So a new machine it is…
I’ll probably buy the cheapest washer in Currys (a Beko something or other…)
I know it’s a false economy, but I’m in an unusual domestic situation, with an absent landlord who should be sorting out things like this, but who isn’t. Me and my flatmate need to wash our clothes, and don’t have the cash for a decent machine. A 12 month guarantee gives some piece of mind, I guess.
Thanks again.
