Bearing water seal lubrication

Hi, after replacing bearings on Bosch washer (I posted some photos on another thread), a good few wash cycles down the line the drum still has a bit of a squeak as it starts or stops turning (no squeak other than immediately after it starts to turn or immediately before it comes to rest). Machine is quiet otherwise. I wiped over everything with an oily rag before fitment.

Hence, wondering whether some additional lubrication is required on the rubber seal? I’m just a bit concerned about greasing it up as I wouldn’t be too popular if it ended up in the washing 🙁

You should have lubricated the seal after the bearing change the detergent will disperse any excess – squeek is more likely to be the belt or the door gasket seal.

Could you explain why the seal is attached to the drum and not inserted firmly into the bearing spigot? 😕

The seal is on the drum only for the purpose of the photo.

Is there any preference on type of grease to use?

No just regular high melt point grease that’s all.

I was wondering if Castrol Red Rubber Grease be the thing for this job… for use up to 110*C apparently:

I notice you have put the grease on the seal face when really it should have been placed in the seal lip as this is where it makes moving contact with the shaft. This could be the cause of the squeek. Or maybe the door seal rubber is catching the lip of the drum?
You can buy special water resistant grease for bearing seals.

Thanks for the reply. The white gunge in the second pic is washing powder gung actually, but thanks for the info.

The grease choice is confusing…, the high temperature grease I can find is all lithium based so surely will ruin the seal?

Not at all, what will ruin the seal in your case is the already worn and somewhat rusty looking drum shaft collar the seal runs on! But, go for silicone grease if you like, that’ll do! 🙂

Thanks… I think! The collar and shaft cleaned up OK with an oily rag so hopefully there is life left in the beast yet 🙂

I’m sure it will live to wash another day but ensure that the future of the machine is enhanced more by doing regular ‘Service Washes’. The detergent based detritus on the old seal was evidence enough to realise that service washes where not necessarily carried out that regularly perhaps? 😉

Thanks, we do run service washes but obviously not often enough.

I just noticed our hosts have a grease that looks to be specific for the job….
