I’ve recently started renting a flat I own to tenants. In the flat is a Hotpoint washing machine I’ve had for seven years. I moved out of the flat six months ago, and the washing machine wasn’t used at all during that time. However, during the first week of the tenancy, the washing maching broke. A repairer has deemed it ‘uneconomical to repair’ owing to broken bearings. My question is this: Is it possible for the bearings to have broken, or to have become more susceptible to breaking, through the washing machine’s disuse? (The alternative is of course that the tenants overloaded it or something.)
