ParticipantNoticed that the freezer seemed to be running a lot with gurgling noises and when opened to put more food in saw that the red warning light was on indicating a low temperature. Switched it to fast freeze but it only held at about -10.
Removed all the food to investigate with the following findings.
Top fan was working
Compressor was switching on ok.
Removed the rear panel inside the freezer and saw that the lower righthand of the freezer element was solid clear ice.
Checked the heater element and it isn’t open circuit.
The thermistor clipped to the freezer element changed resistance when I warmed it up, so assume it is ok.
There is a bi-metal thermostat also clipped to the freezer element but I don’t know how to test that or if it is related to this problem ?
Don’t know where the defrost timer is – is it on the control board ?
What else can I check and how ?The only other strange thing I noticed when I pulled the unit out was what looked like washing powder on the floor. It seems to have emanated from where the pipe goes into the back of the freezer at the top and then to the freezer element inside.
The freezer is only 4 years old.
Any help much appreciated.Graham

It sounds like it has lost some of the refrigerant that is why it is making the noise and only freezing on the corner of the evaporator.
Or the compressor may not be pumping correctlyBob

Thanks Bob
Would this also explain the solid ice buildup, I had assumed it was the defrost not working.

If it was a defrost heater it would be like a lot of snow type ice.
If it is like solid ice in one corner or across part of the evaporator then it is more likely to be low on refrigerant due to a leak.
