I have had my Beko Fridge/Freezer since November 2011 and it is great.

I have noticed lately that the motor seems to be running rather a lot. I have bought small thermostats and have one in the fridge and one in the freezer and it isnt particularly too cold – if anything it might be slightly under the recommended temperatures.

What I am interested in, is how much electricity it is expected to use overnight. I have monitored this and it uses 0.5 of a unit of electricity overnight. (The 0.5 must be just the useage of the fridge/freezer as everything else is off). Is that a lot or is it normal please? I have the dial set at No.2.

I must confess I do switch it off at the electric plug at times when it seems to be on a lot. I dont suppose that is good for the appliance is it? Many thanks for any help in advance.

When you say you have bought small thermostats do you mean thermometers to read the temperature in fridge & freezer section?
You say “its not particulatly cold” could you post the temperature readings you get on here, be aware that some mercury type thermometers will rise the minute you open fridge door & by the time you read it it has risen a few degrees, if you are getting 5c or lower in fridge & -15c or lower in freezer thats about right.
It should’nt run a long time and if it is runnng for lengthy periods without switching off it may be due to poor sealing of the doors for instance, worse case scenario is that the compressor (motor) is failing or its low on refrigerant gas.
Most likely you need to get an engineer to check if you suspect either of the latter.

Food going off or temp obviously too warm are all indicators to the layman. How or what are you using to come to the conclusion the motor is running a lot. Again cavity temp is usually the first indications. Switching the unit of to save money is a ridiculous action, beyond the fact you may damage the unit, it will take the same amount of energy to maintain temp as it would to return it to the temp it was when you switched it off. It may have worked harder due to summer temp, losing refrigerant or just a poor pumping compressor or more likely you just increasing the temp going back and forth checking it or its overfilled or someone slamming the door regularly too hard.

    Hi from Bob
As it is a frost free appliance by turning it off you may have a build up of ice in the freezer as you have interrupted the normal defrost timing.

You will not see the frost as it will be behind the rear panel in the freezer.

The first step would be to fully defrost it so if you can get someone to look after your food.

Turn it off at the mains for 48 hours with the doors open.

When you turn it back on leave it for 24 hours to return to normal.

If it then runs continuously without cutting out check the fan in the freezer is working ok.

If the fan is working then it will be a compressor or refrigerant fault.

    Bob
