ParticipantI found ice in the freezer section of my Befo CDA543F fridge freezer this morning, it was also a bit warmer than normal. I took the cover off to look at the evaporator and it had quite a decent amount of ice built up on it. I found a guide on you tube for checking the 4 connections on it.

The connectors have no labels on them numbering them 1-4 like the ones he is testing. Basically when the timer is operating normally and not in a defrost cycle it is sending a start signal to the compressor, I am getting continuity between 2 of the contacts. When I rotate the timer dial with a screw driver until I hear a loud click, the continuity is lost when the timer sends a signal to stop supplying a signal to the compressor. But apparently then I should get continuity by moving the multimeter to a different contact as this is a switch being made sending a signal to start the heater and the signal to the compressor is not there anymore. The signal from the 2 contacts to the compressor goes dead at this point but no other 2 contacts are making a switch to send a signal to the defrost heater. I have checked all contacts in all combinations and no 2 pairs make a switch continuity. I have also switched the timer until it makes a loud click and put it back in the machine but the defrost heater does not come on. I just wanted to check that I have done it correctly before I buy another one. I have also read through a search on here that it advisable to replace the defrost heater bimetal thermostat at the same time as it is quite cheap and also fails. Thanks for any advice.

I thought that this was a new fridge freezer you had?
You will always have use there, some at least, until a defrost cycle runs of course and the heater melts the ice but I don’t know what the various connections are on that one here, no wiring diagram at home.
But yes, they do fail.
The defrost timer should be this one:

And the bi-metal fuse this one:

We usually change both as the timer popping will usually take out the fuse.

Thanks for the reply kwatt. Yes it’s new well used off ebay :rolls: It has been fine for several days then I noticed this. Whether it was already faulty when I bought it I have no way of knowing. Thanks for the help and the links, will buy both just hope that this cures it. It should do fingers crossed.

The same principals apply. 😉
It probably will cure it but there’s no way to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure.
Many of the appliances I’ve seen for sale privately on Ebay are, will we say, suspect of having the odd problem.

Cheers kwatt items ordered from links that you posted. I have said it before that I am finished with ebay for any items that can be dubious. I definitely mean it now. Thanks again.
