ParticipantI have just bought a second hand Beko frost free fridge freezer. It was a only two years old and in excellent condition, I understood it was sold as seen and took the risk because it was cheap and local.
At first the unit worked completely normally. Then I came home after 2-3 days and found that something had tripped my RCD for the household sockets. I turned it back on again and crossed my fingers, it stayed on. A couple of hours later I was in the kitchen and I heard a loud pop coming from the fridge freezer, it tripped again. Once again I turned it back on with a little more trepidation and again it seemed to work ok. The a short time later it did it again. This time I checked the mains cable and found a damaged area to the insulation, it wasn’t through to the conductor as far as I could see but I shortened the cable cutting out the damage, added a replacement plug and switched it back on. All was fine for about 3 more days and I assumed I had fixed it. Then this morning I came down to tripped RCD again, switched it back on and went through the same routne; it would run for a short while (30 minutes to a couple of hours) and then pop and it would trip. This time it took out my (old and ready to be replaced) dishwasher ♂️ which was on the same multi adaptor – I know not the best practice but I have just moved in and I will put a new kitchen in soon. However, it has now been fine for about 10 hours.
I am thinking that it’s probably something to do with the freezer defrosting function as 3 days seems like a reasonable time interval to activate this feature. So, something in this has a problem and when it’s initiated there’s an earth leak and it trips out. Tomorrow morning I will go an buy a plug mounted RCD so I can try not to take out every other device in the house and protect the new dishwasher which I will have to buy but I would also like to repair the fridge freezer instead of having to buy another appliance (I am in the middle of a divorce, I have just moved into my own place, and have just this week replaced a washing machine, I need to keep costs down). Can anyone tell me if you think I am correct to suspect the defrost function? If yes, what is the most likely thing to fail and how can I test it? I am a competant, technically minded person and I have tools and a multimeter, I enjoy learning about how things work and how to repair them!
Thank you!!!

Moderatorthere is a defrost heater and a drain heater both are suspects but not the only thing
i assume the defrost tube at the rear is positioned correctly in the tray on the compressor

Moderatortook me a sec to realise your pic was on its side lol
but yes look ok to me
yes you need to disconnect heaters and check for earth leakage with a suitable meter
