ParticipantHi
I have a Beko CGA9956FFS Fridge/Freezer which I think has a problem, I think this because;
- The outside on either side of the freezer (freezer bottom, fridge top) is very hot to the the touch, as is the wire/coil on the rear of the unit.
The compressor seems to always be running.
Changing the electronic temperature doesn’t seem to turn off the compressor.
Small amounts of ice are forming on the inside back wall of the fridge.
I have contacted Beko and spoken to one of their authoried repairers who suggested that it was either a gassing or compressor problem which I was surprised by.Does anyone have ideas?
My thoughts are a thermostat related problem….but does this model have a thermostat or is it a combination os sensor and PCB?
Thanks

The F/F is running all the time because the refigerant possibly having leaked or poor compressor performance is failing to pull the temp down so it won’t switch off.
The refrigerant also cools the motor so when it leaks the motor gets much hotter as does the pipework etc.
Sadly for you Beko are correct in their possibilities,as for surprising, not that surprising with stuff at the bottom end of the market.November 11, 2009 at 10:35 pm #303242BigFella

Thanks for the reply spimps 🙂
Disappointing to hear that they might have the problem right…sounds pricey 🙁
My surprise wasn’t the failure of a cheap appliance more that those problems were suggested…is there anyway of checking the cause? They can’t send an engineer until next Thursday!
I ask as the fridge and freezer are both getting cold….there is a good amount of ice on the back internal wall of the fridge (suggesting it’s getting to cold?) and everything in the freezer is frozen.
Perhaps I’ll have to ask Father Christmas for a new fridge/freezer this Christmas….how boring 🙁

Ice is not necessarily proving it’s working well.
It should have a nice thin film and then defrosting it 2 or 3 times an hour depending on room temps and load.
You would have to rely on the engineer for the cause finding,if it’s a leak it’s likely very small one and difficult/impossible to find, could be tracable but it can be in a pipe in the walls of the cabinet.
Refrigerant travels through the freezer first and then into the fridge so the freezer may appear normal and can be colder than required in some cases with this fault.November 18, 2009 at 6:19 pm #303244BigFella

Well the engineer came and confirmed the the diagnosis and we need a new compressor and regassing….£180.00 😥
Apparently not uncommon for its age, and a problem that has become more common across all brands since switching to a more natural gas!?
So now the dilemma….to repair or replace?
I guess I am looking at £300+ for even a low end replacement and closer to £600 for a better brand (Bosch, Liebherr etc)
Is there much else to go wrong if I have the Beko repaired, will it then give me another 4/5 years of use? Or am I more likely to be throwing my money down the drain?
I’m a bl00dy tight and indecisive bugger at the best of times so this is a real puzzler for me 😕
Thanks for your posts.

It’s likely that a replacement compressor would be better than the origional if dealing with Beko.
If you but bottom end again it’s odds on you could be in the same position no t too far down the line.
Advice, well my old garage owner said “you can buy a good car of a bad dealer and a bad car off a gooid dealer”.
Weigh it up or stick a pin in,who knows?
Tight and indecisive,are we related 😀November 19, 2009 at 4:33 pm #303246BigFella

Arggghhhhh! This is driving me slightly nuts! 👿
After much thought I decided to just bite the bullet and get the compressor fixed….so I called up the engineer to confirm a couple of points about guarentees etc and have been left even more confused.
The engineer was honest enough to tell me that there was a chance that due to the overheating of the compressor/pipes that it was possible for there to be contamination in the transom pipes. If this was the case the new compressor would not last long at all…weeks, maybe months but not long term.
What great news….so now it’s a £180 gamble on whether the thing is even repairable.
Has anyone experienced the contamination problem?

Decided to ditch the Beko..it’s off to the local council tip next week.
A nice new Bosch KGH34X44GB is arriving to take it’s place…hopefully it will;
A. Fit the space available…it’ll be tight but should fit.
B. That it is more reliableThanks for the advice!
