ParticipantWe have a Beko DCU8230 tumble dryer and it tripped the RCD in our garage, I isolated it on a plug with it’s own RCD and it would trip whenever it was turned on. The laundry in it was cold and wet so I guessed the heater was faulty as it seems to be common. Although it’s a cheap model I thought I’d be clever and try to fix it, I took the heater off and that stopped the RCD from tripping so again I assumed the heater was the issue and I bought and fitted a replacement.
The replacement doesn’t heat up either. At this point I got out my multimeter and started doing a lot of reading! I took the new heater back off and tested the thermostat for continuity, it was fine, I tested the resistance on the NTC and that was also fine. I tested the resistance on the elements for both the 1600W and 700W elements and that was also fine.
I pulled the cover from the pump on the back and there was no water in the sump, the float was down and the overflow switch wasn’t active. I then pulled the door NTC and tested that and the resistance was to spec and reduced as it got warmer.
When I put the machine into service test mode all the lights flash (step 1), I push start/cancel and the drum starts turning (step 2) but the ‘clean filter’ light flashes and it won’t move on to the next step. In the service manual it says:
Step 2: Push start/pause/cancel button. All leds go off. The drying led is on. Motor turns counter clockwise. Check the if the sensor are open circuit. If yes, the buzzer/cancel led will blink. Unless it is open circuit, the next step won’t be activated.
I’m not sure what ‘Check the if the sensor are open circuit’ means exactly, can anyone point me in the right direction? The filter is clean, as is the condenser, and I’m not even sure how the dryer determines if those parts need a clean out.

there is also another NTC at the front that measures the air in the filter area

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply. I pulled the door NTC and it measured 12Kohms which was reducing as I held it in my hand. I believe that’s just about spec for the part? Is that the only sensor that determines whether the lint filter needs changing?

Probably the main pcb gone if front ntc is alright

door ntc is rated 12000 ohms at 25 degrees C
heater ntc is 19500 same tempalways select a timed programme for tests without wet clothes inside as some machines wont heat unless damp is detected
if this fails remove and check main pcb for damage

Thanks again for the replies guys.
Do you know which sensor would trigger the ‘clean filter’ light?
Before I pull the PCB (which will mean I probably break something) I’d like to double check everything else. I’ve checked the overflow switch as that was actually closed circuit but it appears to be correct, it triggers the ‘water tank full’ light if removed or pressed… is it just the door NTC that determines whether the filter needs cleaning? (excluding a knackered PCB of course)

dont know on Beko but on hotpoint open circuit stat on elements gives same fault. i know its a new element but it cant hurt to check

The thermostat is definitely ok, I’ve tested it again and it’s got continuity and the button hasn’t popped up. I haven’t retested the heater NTC but I’m going to assume that’s still fine.
I pulled the sensor connector block from the PCB and it wouldn’t do anything without it (as expected), but when I plugged it back in the behaviour changed. Instead of not progressing past step 2 on the service test it does now progress all the way through the test stages. In steps 5 and 6 the heaters are supposed to be on and they’re not, I tried to read voltage on the 700w and 1600w wires and got none so I’m going to guess a PCB fault.
I’m not really willing to throw any more time or money into trying to fix this dryer as it was only a cheapy to begin with and I’ve already wasted money on the heater. Thanks for your help chaps but unless anyone has any other suggestions it’ll be new dryer time later today!

only if you wanted to try changing the relays on the main board that control the heater

Well taking the main board out looked too fiddly to be worth the cost of a complete new unit, I did try one more thing though, I bought the old heater back in and went through the service test cycle, when it hit the steps where the heaters were supposed to be on it still didn’t heat up but at least one of the relays on the PCB were arcing and making a crackling sound. Pretty green light show!
It’s now outside waiting for the scrap man and a new one is being delivered tomorrow. I don’t like throwing things away but doing anything else doesn’t seem economically viable with these things! I just wish I’d tested the old heater properly before I assumed that was the original problem, ah well, live and learn 🙂
Thanks again for your help.

is a pity relays are about £4 and 10 mins with a soldering iron

I’m not bad at soldering but I generally do low voltage stuff, not sure I would trust my skills with mains connected appliances… I know it’s pretty much the same thing but I’d rather spend not very much on a brand new one and have some trust in it than potentially bodge the old one and burn down my garage 🙂
The new dryer arrived today, the old one went to scrap. If I hadn’t have bought the heater I’d have probably taken a stab at the PCB but buying both in the hope that it would work again when a brand new one delivered next day is only £250 isn’t worth the risk.
Thanks for all your help. I think next time I’ll just put it on extra cover along with our washing machine and dishwasher and get someone qualified out…. I only went for it myself this time as I thought it would be an easy heater swap out. That’ll teach me 🙂

very same symptoms. with my beko dsc85w dryer.
heaters test ok i had a ntc from you yesterday as mine was dead no readings from it hot or cold. so i have just turned it on and i still have the same problem (no heat).
i took the pcb/control board off to see if anything burnt or blown looks fine.
so can anyone tell me the relay to replace so heaters work ? relay on pcb/control board.
i like the other poster who asked , cannot afford to go out a buy a new machine.
thank you for any info .
ps i had spoken to kenneth on the chat when i ordered the ntc . he did say it could have been the relay on the board.December 19, 2016 at 4:50 pm #441659Cowbell

It’s been a while but from memory if the front and rear NTCs are fine and there is continuity on the thermostat then the only other thing that cuts heat off is the overflow switch. There was a wiring diagram in the service manual, the relays were pretty big as I remember. Mine sparked when I put it through the service test on the steps with the heater activated. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/91840 … ml?page=16

Thanks for the reply and info . i will look at it and let you know.
its just no power getting to the heaters to make them work.
the control panel is the only thing i have not changed.
so i thought of swapping out the relays for new ones , omron G5LA-1A4 12V, but i since find out they do not make them anymore production of the relays finished in 2015 -
