Working on my sister’s dishwasher. Strong smell of smoke and visible smoke from top of door and also from area near the motor. I took out the PCB and found a burnt out component so have ordered a replacement. So far so good but I then investigated the smoke from lower down and found a connector on the motor wiring charred and burned so had been shorting out, presumably causing the smoke from below. I replaced the connector – restarted the machine and it does start up but the display just flashed on briefly and the pump runs continuously. Water is coming in because it circulates through the regeneration circuit at the left hand side of the machine. Still wisps of smoke and smell from the top of the door but no smoke now from below.

I’m assuming (hoping!) that the faulty connector took out the PCB and the continuous pumping is due to the board being fried so hoping that when the new board arrives all will now be well but I’m concerned that there maybe some other fault which will, in turn take out the new board!

I don’t know that the motor is working – it hasn’t actually sprung into life. The windings don’t look burned. Could a motor fault have burned out the connector, followed by the board? Has anyone had a burnt out PCB on this model?

pump only runs for 2 main reasons

    the board or
    overflow float

That’s very helpful Dave, thanks! Not the float – had the base tray out and dried. Didn’t actually check the float switch for continuity but can do to be sure. The board was definitely toast. One component burnt out / disintegrated and scorch mark on the PCB cover but connector down at the motor was also burnt out which seemed like too much of a coincidence! Connector replaced and awaiting new board so fingers crossed!

There does seem to be a bit of a leak at the regen unit – might need a new seal where it connects to the tub. Not enough to trip the float though.

Not so simple!! The machine seemed to be working fine after the replacement board and connector replacement. One week later the continuous pumping was back! Checked the base and found it full of water – regen unit leaking at the o’ rings! I wrapped the pipes with PTFE tape and slipped the o’ rings on above (to expand the o’ rings) That sorted the leak and as belt and braces I added a dab of silicone sealant on top. Another few days pass and apparently dry and working but now we have a new fault! The machine appears to be dropping the detergent tablet and stopping! The tablet is found lying at the bottom, dishes unwashed and machine cold. What on earth is it playing at now?

Well, I’ve fitted a new heater and it’s STILL not heating!! Took out the NTC and tested it with a meter. Not sure what the range should be but it’s certainly giving a reading and the resistance is changing if I hold it under hot and cold water alternately so I’m guessing its probably OK. Beginning to look like a wiring fault or possibly my board’s fried again! Not likely to be wiring – I replaced the entire loom two or three years ago! As I say, the machine seems to go thorough the programme normally – filling – washing, dispensing the detergent, pumping out normally and ending with the normal beeps. It just isn’t heating the water!!!!

Probably the board again: so long as the wiring loom is fine and the thermistor ( which seldom give trouble ) is ok and the heater is ok it should, from what you and how you have written your post, be the pcboard. Think you might be on the road to nowhere with this dishwasher that you can never trust again.

Well, the story continues! Took out the board and had another look. Found the heater relay now faulty! Extracted the relay from the old board – soldered it into the ‘new’ board and the machine has now been working perfectly for the past couple of weeks! I live in hope!

Well that is good news. It goes without saying that given the pattern of failure I would trust this dishwasher as much as Putin

Ha Ha! Maybe it’s his plan for world domination….one dishwasher at a time!! Next thing will be fridges and another cold war……..

    (I’ll get my coat!)
