Symptoms are: compressor starts and gets hot, turns off after a few seconds with an audible click. Starts again after some minutes. Repeat. Temp dropped from 18 c to 8c after 4 hrs but no lower. I changed the run capacitor (because it was easy to get and change, worth a try), but no difference. Could it be the ptc resistor? Or the compressor has had it? Built-in freezer is approx 8yrs old. £600 for new one vs repairs. I’m a heating engineer, relatively handy but not worked on freezer before… any suggestions or tips appreciated.

I’d agree, sounds like the compressor has bit the dust.

Could it be that there isn’t enough refrigerant or there’s a leak causing the compressor to overheat, making the PTC cut off the power? Are both the thin and thick tubes hot?

Thanks for the reply Jack. I was hoping for a bit of diagnostic help to figure out what was wrong, but recommendation was freezer is knackered, get a new one. Still no idea what was wrong but got a new one! Thanks for the interest though.

It sounds like the compressor is struggling to start properly – the repeated clicking usually means the start relay or PTC thermistor is falling, not necessarily the compressor itself. Since you’ve already swapped the capacitor, try replacing the PTC starter/relay. If that doesn’t help, the compressor may be weak or partially seized. Given the age, weigh repair cost vs. replacement, but start with the relay first.
