ParticipantBeko Freezer Model: Tzda524fw
My freezer started icing up with clear ice at the weekend, I have read the article explaining how “Frost Free” works and how to diagnose the problem and have done/found the following
The fan is working
The evaporator is encased in ice
Cannot see heater due to the ice
I disconnected and reconnected all connections on the controller board to ensure there were no dodgy connections
Other than the icing up it seems to be working OKLooking at spare parts lists on various websites it looks like the heater is part of the “Evaporator Cover Assembly Including Defrost Sensor” (see attached diagram item 953) which is about £105 and I presume it would need to be re-gassed to fit this part so I imagine it would cost about £200 plus to repair which is uneconomical, new appliance is probably £250 to £300.
Based on this is it worth me defrosting and checking the heater as if the heater is part of the above assembly it’s probably not worth replacing it.
Is there anything else on this model that is worth checking?
Am I wrong about the price of the heater or it being part of the evaporator assembly?
Is it OK to continue to use it in it’s current state?
Thanks in advance
Simon

Try replacing the defrost sensor on evaporator first.

I can only find the defrost sensor as part of the evaporator assembly which is £105, does anyone know if it’s possible to buy it separately and where I could get it.
Thanks

One problem with frost free freezers can be failure of the heating element, by the fan, which happened to ours. This heating element usually gets rid of the frost build up after the freezing cycle by melting it off the cooling fins in the fan assembly, where it then drips into a tray and evaporates. If it burns out, then the ice builds up (as it would on the elements in any normal freezer that wasn’t frost free), and over a number of cycles, it prevents the air from circulating, which then ultimately stops the freezer from working.
Turning the freezer off can certainly help, as it will allow the ice build up to melt, and therefore allow the fan to start circulating air again. However, ultimately replacing the heating element is the only real solution – I seem to recall it was about a £30 item with about a £50 charge to replace. Now I know where to look, you could order the part off the internet and replace fairly easily, as I think the heating element is generic to a number of makes and models. In our freezer, (an Admiral side-by-side fridge/freeze), the part was fairly easy to get to from the back of the inside of the freezer (once it had been emptied and the shelves and rear plastic panels removed) and replace.
