Bought a fridge freezer secondhand. Apparently was working but not working after delivery. Left gases to settle overnight then plugged in all day but did not get cold. Compressor hums then clicks off after a few minutes. Any advice?

well compressor is not starting for some reason.

    it goes like this.
you switch on at the mains, thermostat realises fridge is too warn and applies power to compressor, you hear the compressor hum which proves power is getting there but it does not start. As the compressor wont start it draws more current than it should, The overcurrent safety device on the motor detects this and shuts off the power with a click. After a few minutes the overcurrent device cools down and reapplies the power. the motor fails again and the power is shut off with a click

short and long of it is it can only be 2 things

1 motor start circuit problems. On some models they use a capacitor which can fail and it quite cheap

2 compressor failure so its scrap
