Hi, our trusty BEKO WMA642 needs new bearings, I have never changed bearings on a washing machine before so I would appreciate a bit of advice, namely how difficult is it to remove the old and fit the new and do I need any special tools?

Not difficult one of the handier ones, front off, take complete tub unit out & split tub, knock out bearings & seal from rear of tub, fit new bearings & seal, check if drum shaft is o.k.
Grease seal assembly fit back together checking tub seal & heater is o.k first.
Spider, bearings, seal, tub seal are all available as spares for this model & should’nt be too dear. You should have it all completed in hour & 1/2, no pressure. 🙂

Sounds easy, (watch me live to regret saying that) Do I have to tap bearings in? If so do I use inner or outer part of bearing?

    Thanks for the advice.

Use something like a wooden drift & mallet, tap them slowly so as they go in evenly. Don’t damage the bearing race cover as this can cause noise later. The only problem you may encounter will be getting off the pulley bolt, sometimes they’re overtight.
