ParticipantHello,
I have a 9 year old frost free freezer unit sitting under the worktop. It’s been great but recently it’s not freezing anything at all. I’ve tried diagnosing myself and wandered if anyone can point me into the right direction. Any help will be appreciated 🙂
The fan whirs, the black unit behind the freezer is warm and I’ve emptied the excess water (not much there).
I’ve stripped the parts and used a multimeter to check for continuity. If i set at 200 ohms (the lowest setting) I always get 1 reading even if i touch both the +ve and -ve together. If I move it to 200k ohms then i get < 1 value when touching sensors.
Using 200k I tested the fan, thermostat, temp controller pcb, heater and some wire connecting to the silver grid. It always shows a number < 1 which I think shows there's a complete circuit. Is this correct using 200k instead of 200 ohms?
The door seals seem good, the freezer is cool like 3-4 degrees but not freezing. I did switch it off and when i put it back on it did manage to freeze some water and then a few hours later it turned to water.
Any help with limiting my diagnosis will be great and also some help about the multimeter. Note: I never placed the sensor in cold water before checking it – not sure if that’s a bad idea.
thanks,

it will have a mechanical noise to it. Also when it first starts if you put your hand on it it will give a slight kick
if its just powered and not starting it will just hum very quietlyDave

if the compressor is running then its either a faulty compressor or lack of gas
if it lack of gas you could have it topped up but you have to think if its leaking and the gasses are flammable
if its the compressor then at 9 years old its not worth itboth these jobs are specialist. I cant even do my own if I wanted to
