I seem to be having a problem with the thermostat on this d/W.

The main cycle runs for two hours and does not seem to stop.

I removed the thermostatic sensor switch (thermistor?) and held it to the side of a boiling kettle, tested it for continuity but it does not make – the circuit remains open.

In the dishwasher, this switch is pressed agaist the metal underside of the base of the dishwasher.

Does any one know are these switches normally MAKE on temp rise or BREAK on temp rise?

Does anyone know the Make/break temp (I think 60 deg Celsius??)

Am I right in assuming the switch is defect as it will not trip when held against the side of a boiling kettle (metal kettle)

    thanks

When you say this runs for 2 hours does it heat & at the end what fault code if any is displayed??
The device you describe is a thermistor which gives a reading back to the electronic p.c.b of the temperature, it doesn’t trip or switch but gives different readings depending on temp’ sensed.

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

    Hello,

Yes, it does heat. In fact on this cycle it periodically heats and then turns off the heater, which I presume is part of the cycle.

Just before it stopped though, the outer skin of the dw was really hot – too hot to touch.

The thermistor had become partially unstuck from the base leaving about a 1 mm gap on one side but still attached on the other side. It is attached with a conductivity material.

When I pressed the thermistor and assembly back up to the base, the machine stopped and partially drained.

This with the fact that it ran for about two hours (too long I think?) up to this and leads me to presume that it is the thermistor – though I would like to test it conclusively (see below)

Also, there is a separate cold rinse only cycle on these machines and this works fine – I presume the thermistor has no function in this cycle.

I did not look at the panel to see if an error code was present.

I now understand what you say that there is no ‘trip’ with a thermistor. But surely, I should get a resistance reading the hotter or cooler the thermistor becomes?

I only get a reading of infinity on the ohmmeter regardless if the thermistor is applied to a boiling kettle or left in the fridge.

Is there another way to test the thermistor?

    regards,

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

Maybe it is underfilling with water, & theres not enough to keep heater pressure switch on, try throwing in a pint of water after its started to see if it continues & heats as it should.
As far as I remember the appliance should heat to the required setting & washes for a further 10 min’s after the temp’ has been reached.
NTC should read approx 5000-6000 ohms at 20 degrees & reading should go down as the temp’ increases, to about 600 – 650 ohms at 60 degrees.

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

    Thanks for your help.

There is absolutely no reading out of the thermistor – when subject to heat or when cold.

I ordered a new one. It has not been delivered yet.

Are these thermal limiters or thermistors? Are the terms used interchangeably although it would seem incorrect to do so?

I have seen what looks to be the same part described as both.

Is there anywhere, I can obtain a wiring diagram for this machine.

Finally, roughly how long should a ‘normal’ wash cycle run for? I never had a DW before so I do not know. Am doing up this one to use myself.

By the way, there is a plastic assembly on these that lets in the water through a set of channels. It was choked with lime etc. and no water was coming into it (origina problem)

I used a mix of domestos toilet cleaner and water and let soak for a few days. Worked a treat. Clean as a new pin 🙂

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

    Hi,

I still need help with this machine.

It does not give out an error code.

I changed the thermistor but the problem persists.

It fills with water. It heats. It empties. Then it fills again.

This time it heats until the case gets so hot you cannot touch it. Then it suddenly stops. When I open the door, it is full of water.

    Any idea?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this?

    thanks

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

I’m getting the E3 error, but not every time.

The water is being heated as I’ve recorded 50 deg C using a thermometer mid cycle.

I’ve just installed a new thermal sensor, and the first run worked all the way though. The second run ended early with the E3 message 🙁

I’m not sure what to try next – any thoughts?

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

If heating element is still heating after allowed time, control board will advance to next stage & and at end of wash alarm will sound for 30secs & E3 will be displayed.
If heating element is found to be heating during a stage when it should’nt be, or during internal test heater is found to be open circuit, it will sound alarm for 30secs, it will run drain pump for 90secs & E3 will be displayed.
Note cause of heating error could be faulty thermistor giving false information to control board.

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

Thanks – I seem to be having the symptoms you’ve described with the unit sounding the alarm for 30 seconds, the machine being drained and E3 displayed.

    Is the thermistor available separately?

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

Thermistor should be available, its located behind the wash motor & secured on bottom/base of machine, it will have 2 blue wires connected to it & goes to 2 terminals sometimes marked RE on circuit board.
Some of these dishwashers had 3 separate sensors mounted on a bracket clamped to base, but yours will more than likely have just thermistor.

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

Thanks Seamy, is the Thermistor the same as the “Sensor Thermal Limiter” or is this a different component?

These are the only parts that seem to be available, and ive installed a new thermal limiter already.

Re: Belling IDW604 thermostat switch defective?

I’d be thinking that a thermal limiter is a cut-out device to shut off if it goes over temp’.

A thermistor is a device that changes resistance according to the temperature it senses.

Can you confirm the product code 44444???? from the data plate, as theres a few of these, MK 1 & Mk 2 etc

The product code is 444445898 It was purchased in June 2008, so it’s lasted quite well.

Thermistor in that one. The picture shows it with 2 blue wires attached pressed up against base of appliance .

If its not curing problem it “may” be fault with p.c.b, would advise to consider getting it checked by an engineer, it could prove costly.

    Thanks for your help.

I’ve already changed that, so perhaps it’s time for a new machine.
