ParticipantLast year, by dishwasher was playing up:
The model number is worn off but it would appear that it is indead the Fagor-Brandt built model.
I took it apart, sprayed up the timer with WD40, cleaned the relay connectors for the Start/Stop and Normal/Econ/Quick Wash buttons.
It has run without fault since, then yesterday, it started again.
Its slightly different in the timer does not end its cylce and start another, and another and so on.
It stops a third of a way round the cycle on continuous wash. I think that its the relays, just an educated guess. The Normal/Econ/Quick wash all have a relay on each button and am I correct in thinking that pressing down a relay, will increase or decrease the wash timer cycle?
If so, would I be correct in thinking that the Normal wash relay is sticking, and does not send its signal at the end of a timed cycle for the timer to progress, thus it just sits there running, until I insert a torx head drive into the middle of the timer module in the bottom of the unit, click it round 1 or 2 clicks, and the cycle completes as normal?
Any help appreciated, and I bow to your infinite wisdome and appologise if my assumptions are incorrect.
Thanks in advance

Thermostat or heater would likely do that. Could also be the timer.
There’s no relays in those machines as there’s little or no actual electronics.
But without a full model number it’s not possible to go any further really as all we know is it’s one of the Brandt machines with the timer at the bottom… maybe.

I have just taken some pics to help with the ID as you know, Bernstein went pop a while back. Mine says made in France on the worn sticker, and alot of the internals are in Italian.
Hope this helps:::

Doesn’t help much as, in order to look up parts or any information everything and, I do mean everything, is geared to work from brand, model number, serial number*, rough diagram, part number.
*At this point you can get technical, if there is any.
I know that’s a variant of the old Brandt things but which one, who knows. Nothing comes up under that model number but, since Bernstein have been bust twice since these were around don’t be surprised if most stuff for it is NLA.
Also, Brandt has been passed about two or three times since then. Plus, Brandt’s attitude is that, if it’s over about eight years old, parts go NLA.
MFI also used these for Hygena and Diplomat but parts are getting scarce.
What I’m saying is that it’s getting on a bit and probably due to retire to a recycling centre. 😉
But check the wash element which should look like this if memory serves, either that or it’s the other one we used to use a lot. Common failure on those.
Door stats are also worth looking at.
Timers rarely went faulty.
Wash motors and pumps did fail, but nowhere near as much as elements and the internal plastics for the spray arms.

Would the serial number be anywhere else on the machine, stamped on the back or something.
I remember last time it was playing up, i typed the part number on the timer into google and came up with a polish site listing it for about £35….for the timer, that is very cheap, as I think it was over £100 here in the UK.
Shall I pull the unit out our not?

Here is the timer I found last time, might help to shed some light onto what model Bernstein it is?

It cross refs over to Brandt: DWF041WU, DWX031U, VN8888U1, VW8888U1

There’s the problem without the actual model number, you can’t be sure it’s right. 🙁
Even the info on the label of the part is not enough as they often change for numerous reasons.

Possibly 02-600472 – not that it will help much. When it sticks, does it heat? Machine will probably use static heat – thermostat restarts the timer when the circuit completes.

Good one Penguin, I have just noticed that no heat is present throughout the cycle.
At the end, it dries, and again, no heat is present.
Does that point to something obvious?

With respect, heat was the first thing that kwatt mentioned……. 😀
Resistance test through element is your starting point – typically c.25ohms is good. Have a look around whilst underneath, there may be a safety thermostat with a red re-set button needing pressing.

Cool, thanks Penguin/Kwatt
Can you just give me a few pointers as to how to get the element out, I am assuming, pull the whole unit, lay it on its front door, and start pulling bits from underneath, or would I go from the inside of the unit, down under the filter/tub?
Thanks again guys, first rate forum!

Remove lower cover panel (the one with the hole cut out of it). Heater should be to the right. No need to remove – disconnect power and the leads to the heater to avoid back readings and test across the terminals.
If there is a safety thermostat, it’s round the back of the sump moulding.

ParticipantRe: Bernstien Dishwasher playing up AGAIN
Well, good and bad news.
I pulled the whole unit out after getting a reading of .25-.28 ohms from an automotive DC Multimeter. I found the reset button, stashed away in a place you would never see it. I followed the wire, and it was only by feel that I found it, and indeed, it had tripped. Clicked it down and reassembled after a thorough clean out and presto, I have heat again.
The bad new is, is that it is still sticking at the same point on the timer.
Do I now get a new timer? How do I investigate the thermostat?
I think it tripped due to being stuck mid cycle for so long.
Advice?

Ok, I am 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure that my model (looking at spare parts catalogues and images on Goolge) is a BF 41
Does that shed any light on my problem?
