Hi everyone. My vented Hoover 8kg tumble dryer is about to give up completely, only working on hottest temp now. Previously I had one with a sensor, I think it was a Philips Whirlpool. The sensor bit kept going wrong. Someone told me that was due to my unheated utility room. The room is part of the house just no radiator. It also houses a fridge freezer and washing machine. I’ve been looking at A+ rated heat pump models and wondering if one would work properly or if I should stick with vented As all the vented ones now seem to have sensors will I get problems there too? I’m monitoring the temp in there which has been 20 c since yesterday, but it gets very cold in there in cold weather and I don’t like keeping the door open then. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi

If you use the tumble dryer all year round then I would simply go for a vented dryer with a mechanical countdown timer like the Hotpoint TVM570P. There are other suppliers out there who also produce this type of machine.

At 20 degrees C a sensor dryer should work, at 12 C it probably won’t. If you need the sensor dryer then yes you would need to heat that area in the winter.

Heat pump dryers are okay if you are not in a hurry for the clothes to dry. But like a sensor appliance you would need to add heat in there.

    HTH 🙂

I would also keep an eye on your fridge freezer because a lot of units can defrost the freezer if it gets too cold

Thank you both, that’s what I need, glad there is a no frills one out there. The fridge freezer has been fine for years, maybe it’s the very thick bowed door helping.

Oh and I want one that takes 8 or 9kg as I often wash duvets. I see from googling that the model suggested is 7kg and has a don’t buy Which warning for catching on fire too.

You are wise to steer clear of Hotpoint due to their extreme fire risk and unreliability. White Knight are fine products and highly recommended here.

I personally have an issue with machine washing duvets. In so much as the domestic washing machines (even the 10kg ones) are far too small to allow for the duvet to move in the drum. Moving around, tumbling over themselves due to the drum paddle action is essential to washing anything. Duvets just go round and round and round without movement. Rendering duvet washing a pointless exercise.

There are no less than 2 solutions to washing a duvet:

    1) Fill up the bathtub with sudsy water, hurl in the duvet and then jump up and down on it. Dry on washing line over 3 days.

    2) Take your duvet to the dry cleaners every 3 months or so. 😉 😀

    Hi

Rather than taking the duvet to the dry cleaners or launderette it’s just as cheap to buy a new one and donate the old one to your local dog or cat rescue centre.

There is also the Beko DRVT61W but it is still a 6kg.

I know it’s frowned on by certain people but Hotpoint still produce an 8kg vented dryer with mechanical timer.

The cats and dogs home won’t take duvets as they can’t wash them, and as I have 4 rescue dogs who have occasional accidents or roll in stuff then lay on the bed duvet washing is a lot more frequent than 3 monthly. The laundrette is expensive and uses perfumed products that make me ill. Also I have a feather duvet that is washable and expensive to replace as suggested, especially as it was in a sale when I bought it.
