ParticipantHad a call arranged for 2.30 this afternoon when I arrived the customer was in a state of shock. 😥
She had just got back to find her dog dead in the utility room. 😥
The hot fill tap to the washing machine(which was near the back door and exposed) had not been blanked off when she brought her new Bosch some years ago and the dog must have jumped up and turned it on.
The room was soaked both the washing machine and tumble dryer were badly water damaged and the dog was laying dead on the floor covered over. 😥
This dog suffered a long and painful death which could have been avoided if the hot supply had been blanked off correctly. 😥
Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

graham, a very good warning given the supply of cold fill only machines. to be honest i am guilty in the past of not blanking off the hot water but recently i have always made sure it is blanked off. particularly if the hot supply is under the sink, a careless moment when the customer is stuffing things on the self can easily knock the supply on, also if there are children in the house and the supply is easily acssesible their little fingers can turn the supply on. for the cost of a blanker it’s peace of mind for me and more importantly the customer.

when we used to sell machines and the cold only started to come in we used to always blank off the unused hot. I’ve seen loads of supposedly professionally fitted machines with the hot left exposed. If I come across one during a repair I will fit a cap. WHY WHY WHY dont the manufacturers supply one? costs pence saves pounds………………or more

If you get caught out without a 3/4″BSP cap when you are replacing an old machine with a ‘cold fill only’ new one, or when you see a vulnerable tap exposed at the back of the cupboard, here’s a handy way to make one on the spot.
1) Using the scrap old hot hose, saw through the plastic 90 degree elbow and remove the red finger nut. Save both the washers.
2) Find a 10 pence piece.
3) Put a hose washer either side of the 10p and press into the nut.
4) Fit to the end of the hot supply tap as you would fit the hot hose.
5) Tighten, turn on and test for leaks.I used this method quite a few times, especially when Zanussi introduced their ‘cold fill only’ Jetsystem machines in the mid-eighties. It works perfectly!!
Hope that helps y’all!! 8)

Must say that I have not blanked off every hot supply that I should have done but have always removed the red lever so it cannot be turned on, however I will be ordering some caps tomorrow.

If so would it not suggest theire is a fault in the mains circuit?

I did not ask the customer the exact details but I think the water temperature was so hot that it turned the small room into a sauna that must have suffercated the poor thing. 😥
An area of plaster was missing next to the tap and I would say water pressure had caused this. I guess they have a Combi Boiler.
Might be going back next week to check the Tumble Dryer and Washing Machine so may find out more then.
Should I condem both appliances to be on the safe side.?
When I left the owner was digging a grave in the middle of the lawn.
He was an Alsation cross, so not a small dog.

GrahamShouldn’t be necessary…usual safety tests and functional tests once they’re dry should suffice?
