ParticipantI have seen posts around this issue – just wanted to check what my options were …
Machine was working yesterday – several loads. Last load – filled up with a bit of water, wash selector knob clicks and whirs round, but no action from the drum at all.
I have checked/cleaned the water level sensing mechanism as per the well-quoted links, and as kindly demonstrated by a previous visit from a Comet engineer, but in the past the drum did actually turn when that was blocked, it just did not spin ..
So .. it could be a motor / brushes problem, but I am not that hopeful as it went from working fine to dead in one go … also http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … mberg+1301
I’ll check the motor in the next day or two anyway (power off of course), but is the only other option to change the main controller board mechanism – if so, is that a 100 or 200 quid job?
Thanks
Alan

motor brushes can cause a machine to go from working one load to not the next.
plug out and check the brushes first before anything else.
also obviously check the belts still on.

Good News!As you advised, I took out the motor and had a look at the brushes. Not being an electronics techy, I just noted that there was very little resisitance to turning the commutator – so I brushed off excess carbon deposits and gave them a few sharp taps.
After re-assembly the motor was back in action – so it was either the brushes or the connections, most likely the brushes as both seemed to give similar audible resistance after the overhaul. I know this is a stop-gap, and I’ll probably have to replace them at the next ‘service’.
As many people have observed, this is an excellent site, and is going a long way to getting full use out of people’s machines instead of falling into the easy dump/replace cycle.
Many thanks.
Alan 😀

best to replace the brushes now rather than wait for them to fail again (which will be very soon)and possibly cause damage to the motor commutator!!

i would certainly agree that it would be much better and cheaper in the long run replacing the brushes now rather than waitng till they need replaced.
it is fairly common for a motor to fail with a damaged commutator,
when the brushes have worn down too far.
better to spend the price of a pair of brushes than the cost of a motor.April 23, 2007 at 10:49 pm #210468grease-monkey

OK, I believe it is the CAR79 brushes that I need for this model .. thanks again for the advice
