Surely it doesn’t need an electrician to replace the grill element in my Blomberg double oven?
I’ve bought the replacement element, but as far as I can see inside, the old element is secured by a couple of screws from the behind the casing and it means taking the whole oven out and unscrewing the back to replace the element. Can this be right? Has anyone successfully replaced a grill element?

That is correct Ruth, the whole oven has to be removed from it’s housing to fit the element.

I’ve got the oven out of its housing but the next problem is what to undo the back with: not a Phillips screwdriver; not it appears an Allen key either: is there some kind of screwdriver with a ‘star-shaped’ head? Dumb question I assume, but then I’m no expert: I just believe _I_ ought to be able to change the grill element…
“Torx” fitting Ruth – most DIY places do a set of bits in a box at a reasonable price. Welcome to the wonderful world of appliance repairs…….. 😕

It sounds like that’s a torx then, you should be able to get these in any DIY store these days.
They were originally used as a tamperproof screw to stop people taking things apart 😉

One more question: got the Torx, undid the screws, took off the back of the oven, unscrewed the scews holding the element in, removed the clips connecting the wires to the four connectors on the back of the grill element. The problem is that I can’t really see what I’m doing (it’s half out of its housing and the mains cable doesn’t stretch much further). So I’m pretty sure I got the two yellow wires correctly conencted to the clips on the back of the new element, but I’m not quite so sure about the green and the black wires.
I _think_ that the green cable went to the right hand of the two middle connectors with the conenctors facing away from me (i.e me standing at the front of the oven). Then the black cable should go to the outside right connector. Does this sound right?

The odds on anyone having the wiring diagram for this appliance are virtually nil. Comet will have, but they won’t tell you.All you can do is to put the back on and try it. The two yellows will be the neutral side, so the green and black will be the live feeds. One of three things can happen – you’ll get the outer element instead of the grill and vice versa, so a wiring reversal with the power off will solve it. Secondly, it’ll be spot on. Thirdly the breaker will trip, in which case it’s multimeter time – get pro help!
Next time – diagram first.
BTW, was there no separate earth to this element? You have only mentioned four wires.

Well, it doesn’t blow any fuses, so that’s good news. It may be that only the inner of the two grill elements is coming on, so could be my green and black were the wrong way round, or maybe the clips just need more pressure to make a really good contact – it took pliers to get them off. Still, none of it was working before so that’s progress. Getting the screws back into the element fixing plate was a real pain, it kept cross-threading.
Are all ovens so badly designed? Or is there anymake/model where one can replace the grill element without taking everything to pieces? Certainly won’t get a Blomberg another time…
