ParticipantHi Guys.
Can anybody suggest some easy to use bookkeeping software for a vat registererd sole trader?.
I`ve been using ledgers for past 30 years but now told I need to move on?.
Do these packages allow me to send invoices by e-mail so as to save on postage?.Thanks.

Surprised your accountant hasn’t pushed you in the direction of Sage.
Sage Instant should suit you, available over the counter from the likes of Smiths, Office World or PC World or on-line. Dead easy to use & the support is good, and yes you can e-mail invoices.

I use Quickbooks
They have varios versions, but I use Premier 2008 which has everything you need including stock control.
It can be a bit expensive for this version (my accountant supplied it for free as he had a spare copy and it makes his life easier and my bill cheaper 😀 )
But if you dont want to spend that sort of money try this

for a sole trader, quickbooks is better than sage, I tried to change to Sage and found it all way over my head. It depends on your accountant though and what he is happy with, most accountants are brought up on SAGE so dislike quickbooks.
Quickbooks can print off invoices on blank paper (or email them of course) while sage require you buy pre printed invoices over which you details will be printed.
Support however is not so great on quickbooks unless you pay them for it and for a sole trader its not viable.January 3, 2011 at 1:03 pm #339938Toni

I would agree with Mark, I used Sage for a couple of years on the recomendation of may accountant but in the end I asked him for simpler system, which is when he gave me the Quickbooks package. I have not looked back since

You don’t have to buy Sage stationery. You can use plain paper & set your own headers and footers if needed. If you do payroll and online submissions, Sage is pretty darn good as all is integrated nicely.
Downside with Sage is they keep “updating” their software, and you are forced to upgrade after a while as you get to the point where your old package does not fit the version the accountants use.
Reading the other posts, Quickbooks may be all you need. I used to use Quicken which I believe was the forerunner.
Suggest you check with your accountant, and perhaps tell him what you want to use and make sure he is familiar with it. Don’t ask for a recommendation as he will say Sage at once.

Same as Alex, use Sage and the technical help is really good, you do have to upgrade regularly but you can pay direct debit interest free which is handy

Who told you? 30 years eh? You know what they say…’old dog, new tricks…’ I can’t help thinking that you’ll find it all a bit daunting just switching TBH. Sage and Quickbooks (not to mention Money Manager) all do the job and brilliantly I must say, but they’re a bugger to set up and you’ll need the patience of a saint in order to succeed going PC crazy into the bargain.
Your accountant is by far the best person to consult when it come to software. For example he may likely as not use Sage but by the same token probably doesn’t? It’s important you both speak the same computer language right from the outset. My accountant hates Sage, won’t entertain it. Sage is all double entry stuff that accountants are supposed to prefer, not him though.
So, and as Alex says, check with your accountant, meanwhile stick with what you know before rocking the boat in choppy waters……! 😉

£250 pa to my book keeper and all sorted. Saves me money every year that a computer programme can’t. Just taken my books to him and he only uses them to do calculations, not the donkey work and he’s a pro.
I prefer the ledgers too but I suppose it’s all down to how you are with computers.
