ParticipantThrough the last couple of weeks my washing machine has developed a squeak while spinning.
By removing the belt (after removing the power) and turning the drum I get the impression that it is the bearing that is squeaking. The drum turns freely with no indication of rough spots or anything.
I’ve searched the forums but can’t find an answer to my questions, can anyone help me please.
Q1. are we likely to cause some long term damage to any parts of the machine other than the bearing by continuing to use it without replacing the bearing? ( I don’t have the time or money for the repair till the end of the month)
Q2. is it a simple job to replace this? (for a competent DIYer rather than a qualified and experienced washing machine repair man)
Thanks for your advice.Andy

If it is the bearing then continuing to run it can cause more damage and make the repair more expensive.
I would also say it is not really a DIY job.
First thing I would do is put some fairy liquid on the front lip of the stainless steel drum and rotate it to make sure the squeak is not coming from the drum rubbing the doorseal.

A correct Enr number from the rating plate inside the door would help, some Bosch machines do have a sealed drum, no bearing repair possible on these. 😥

Thanks gents.
I tried the washing up liquid, but unfortunately it didn’t work. The noise does seem louder from the rear of the drum so I’m guessing it probably is that bearing.
the ENR number is
E-NR:WAE2416SGB/01 FD8606 100747if its easier for you than cross referencing the ENR number, I’ve put up some photos of the bearing
http://flickr.com/gp/wright-halifax/874i28
Though if this is unlikely to be a DIY job then I guess I’ll have to get out the Yellow Pages (unless by some freak this is actually covered under warranty and my machine isn’t 3 weeks outside of the warranty period!)Cheers

Just a suggestion but in my help if you remove the pulley bolt and pulley
to see the condition of the outer bearing.
A bit of grease may also help.
Are you sure the noise is coming from the drum and not the motor?BTW I have attempted a bearing replacement on a similar model and
would not recommend it……only an amateur myself but splitting the drum
is not for the faint hearted.December 5, 2009 at 10:29 pm #305677Penguin45

Putting the eNr number into http://www.bshcustomerservice.com shows a machine with a splittable tank, albeit requiring a great deal of effort. Note that bearing failure is normally identified by a dull rumbling sound which will get progressively louder as the wear increases and play can be detected at the front of the inner drum.
If the squeak is a little “Sqeeee” sound as the drum starts and stops, it’s the bearing seal which needs lubricating – split the tub job.
