Hi there. My washing machine has stopped agitating or spinning. I’ve changed the carbon brushes but still no luck. The machine fills and completes the cycle and drains at the end. The counter ticks down, as if it’s performing the selected cycle, but the drum doesn’t spin. It does click and rotate a tiny amount at the time when it seems like it should begin rotating. It clicks and moves a small amount then clicks another couple of times. Any ideas? Thanks, Rob.

as long as the brushes are making contact with the armature properly then this has to be a board fault. you could take the board out and look for bad solder joints on the relays

Thanks for your response. The brushes are in contact, but I would say that they look as if they need to wear in a bit to feel fully in contact. I’ll take a look at the board and see if I can see any bad joints. I’ve found someone selling a refurbished motor pretty cheap. Would you say that there’s no point having changed the bushes?

I would ignore the motor for the minute

have you got a multimeter to check for motor continuity ?

where the old brushes worn right down ?

I’m sure I’ve got a multimeter somewhere. I’ll give it a try. The brushes had about 10mm left, maybe a bit less.

Any tips on measuring the motor for continuity?

motors can have either 6 or 7 terms

    6 term
    2 armature
    2 field
    2 tacho

    7 term
    2 armature
    3 field
    2 tacho

armature very low reading. Field very low reading between any of terms. Tacho is higher but this is not your problem I don’t think

with the fact the brushes sound like the had life on them it does sound more like a board problem
