Hello, I have a Bosch 1401 GB /01 washing machine which has been idle for some time. When we now use it, at the slowish spin which happens after the pump has drained the water, but before the spin proper starts, the complete drum crashes against the front and back of the cabinet. The shock absorbers seem ok because the up and down movement is damped as I would expect. I can’t see anything restricting lateral movement though, is there a genius out there with any ideas before I get the great BIG hammer out. Cheers!!

Your WFF1401GB/01 has to have knackered shockers (the LH one usually the worst affected) for such extreme movement and they need replacing. All 3 top springs are in position are they? Final questions: Is the motor running OK, brushes OK?

Hello Martin, thanks for replying. I find it hard to believe that the shockers could be the problem because when I watch the spin, the vertical movement is minimal, very well damped. The movement is completely rocking front to back. I have just put new brushes in the motor and that is running smoothly with no sparking. The top springs are in position and holding the drum central to the door so I guess they are ok. If you still feel it has to be the shocks, I will pop them out and give them a try.

The pivot mounts of the shockers wear too don’t forget. The effect is the drum flops about front and back like the proverbial ‘p’ in a bucket. 😉
