I have an old Bosch American fridge freezer Model No KGU 6655 – Im sure it was made by Maytag as when I ordered a few new items for it via Bosch’s website they came in Maytag bags! 😆

My problem is the ice machine/water mechanism has been leaking gently for about 6 months…. this causes a few dribbles but the main problem is a large ice block in the bottom where the water collects in the bottom of the freezer. Then this weekend the ice dispenser packed up and whilst it still makes ice cubes the flap does not open to dispense them so it crushes ice up but does not deliver it to the glass…. also the water dispenser activates when you press a glass to it but then wont switch off unless you open the door!

So do I buy a new one as its old and on its way out or do I have Bosch come and repair it….

To buy a new one I looked around the website here and see that Maytag are recommended yet a close friend has put many Maytags into clients properties at their requests and has told me that EVERY one he has installed develop the fault I have and that Maytag service is dire!!!! So how come you guys recommend them???

I have the choice of a Bosch KAN 58A50 for £855 or a Siemens KA58NA40 for £850 or a Neff K3990 for £1400. I spoke to BSH and whilst the older models were made by Maytag the new ones are not… but they cant tell me WHO makes these new ones….or do I buy a Maytag as suggested here? At least if the BSH one goes wrong I have a reasonable service network to back me up!

So – my dilemma is do I fix the old one and then risk something else going wrong or the problem reoccuring as it seems Maytag cant fix this glitch or do I buy a new one and then if so… which one….

Your help would be greatly appreciated..

    Hi
These were made by Maytag and damn good side by side IMHO 😉
To fix this one you would ideally need to change –

    172834 Fountain kit
    172830 Sleeve
    172833 Microswitch
    480378 PCB
266803 Housing (If solenoid has overheated and distorted it)

All available from spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk I would get prices first and then get a stiff drink 😯 😀

Unplug appliance if you are to attempt yourself :plug:

Or what would you reckon is a fair price to have an engineer come fix it. Bosch have quoted their normal £65 odd for the first 30 minutes then £4 per 6 minutes there after plus parts….. If you think its a decent piece of kit then I will have it repaired and keep it

    Hi
Its got to be worth £65 to assess as it was an expensive bit of kit when new.
We also have engineers which are equally qualified to work on such appliances, please use the link for an engineer below.
The job in question would take a suitably qualified engineer approx 1 hour or less to repair; just to give you a ball park idea.

Greg – thanks for the sound advice – I will get someone in to check it out as you are right – £65 plus repair has to be cheaper than £850 for a new one…. Will let you know how I get on but it will have to wait till I get back from holiday so will repost once I am back at the end of september.

    Many thanks

Re: Bosch American Fridge Freezer problem – help & advic

Never got round to the repair as things improved but just come back from holiday and I think it really is on its last legs. Fridge temp is getting dicky and freezer is frosting up badly so I am considering the folowing

Admiral GC2027HXKW at a blinding £559 but it only has two drawers in fridge and I would prefer three

Admiral SAX224GB – full stainless steel at £1099.99 – cant find picture of inside so any help here would be appreciated as I need to find out if it has three drawers. This is my favourite if it has the 3 drawers in the fridge

Also aware that Admiral are pulling out of making Fridge Freezers but they are rebadged Maytags anyway.

Very unsure about an Amana AC2228HEKB in white – this is locally on Ebay and slightly dented but very well equiped and easy for me to collect. Just not sure about Amana – I know they are part of Maytag but has anyone got any direct experience of them?

The problem is the Buying Guide has not been updated for a few years and the Admiral models they suggest are no longer available so any input on the current American Fridge Freezers would be most welcome.

    Many thanks in advance
