ParticipantMost pattern motor brushes often are of extremely good quality and reliability. However exceptions do occur especially with my observations of the pattern manufacturers equivalent to the Bosch (154740) carbon brushes.
The trouble is that due to the high cost of the genuine spare, many are tempted to buy and fit these pattern alternatives. In this case there are 2 problems that need consideration before buying, firstly the most obvious is the undersized and therefore badly fitting spade terminal fixing. You will very quickly discover when fitting that the terminal is too small and will not hold fimly in the slide fixing mount.
Secondly, the carbon compound is ‘questionable’ in that I believe it to be of a softer composition resulting in shorter life at best. That is assuming of course you dare to fit them in the first place?
Below is a photo of the genuine (on the left) and the pattern (on the right). In the case of the sample pattern brush? well that came from a supplier in the midlands. I have also have tried other suppliers for their equivalents with identical observations. (I suspect though that they are all using the same source of supply?).

My advise in conclusion is to only fit the more expensive genuine brush set and avoid the pattern (rubbish) in this case ๐

Yes have had to “squash” the ends of the holder to get them to stay in.

I don’t seem to fit many brushes in Bosch machine but for years I’ve used pattern Bosch carbons soldered into Indesco holders on Merloni machines. I’ve never changed such brushes twice on the same machine. The ones I use for this are those with a plain wire and no tag or spring.

Another top flight, high profile wholesaler very kindly sent me a sample of their 154740 ‘equivalent’ brush set, and again the spade terminal is too small (4mm instead of 5mm). Only 1mm difference that’s true but it means that they simply do not fit and therefore are not suitable.
Whilst I agree (as Simon46 rightly points out) that you have to “squash” the inner brush housing otherwise the brushes will spring out the moment the motor ramps into spin mode, short out against the motor end frame and blow the module up in the process…….
……Not a good idea ๐
I will stick to fitting only genuine ones thank you very much, or until they someone comes up with an alternative that actually fits

ParticipantI often put a dab of contact adhesive on any part that requires extra security.
The heat and water resistant stuff that we use on dryer bearings
Easily removed if required
I use it on hoses that are tricky or require extra security
Sensor tubes that might shake off
Terminals when required
Screws that require a thread lock
Also makes a good evidence tampering device
This is the “best thing in your toolbox” thread isn’t it?

Am going to get genuine from now on. I want to fit and go, not spend ages doing mods because of inferior quality.

Curious. I use plenty of the Europart 05-BS-03 brushes with no problems at all, and have done for a good few years now.

Apparently (so I have be told?) all the UK wholesalers use the same supply source (as I suspected). And not having seen a Europart brush, please could you tell me if it is 4mm? or 5mm?

Interesting comments indeed. Basically there is a problem with which brush you buy. To look at the brushes, they appear identical to the AEG?FHP brush which goes into the type R and Type L holders with a 4.8mm terminal. However, the terminals are slightly different.
We stock this line under our reference Part No.9991. It is indeed the brush that is supplied to the OEM by the manufacturer and is indeed the correct carbon compound as a laminated/sandwich brush is required and we export this brush all over Europe.
It is interesting reading your comments about carbons on this forum as there does seem to be a lot of confusion.
Once again, I suggest that you check out the carbon section on http://www.homespare.com because this is the only place that you will not get short changed. Where a laminated brush is required, this is what you will get.
Solid brushes are simply not up to the job. You have been warned!

Today I got to a call that needed carbons and ‘Sods Law on a Monday morning’ came into play here as I had run out of genuine 154740 brushes ๐ฏ
But I did have a ‘pattern’ pair that was given to me as a free sample from a very kind and prominent wholesaler (Part No BS12103 ๐ ) and managed to fit them albeit having to adopt a ‘soldered in place’ technique rather than the ‘bodge it to lodge it in place’ method to prevent them from falling out (which they would have done otherwise). But, I’m not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth so to speak and wish to express my gratitude to them for the parts (I owe you a beer at least on this Andy).
Nevertheless, whilst it got me out of jail, again I have to say that with this type of carbon brush, only genuine fits.

Me too. I use the 43mm carbons and leave them flat on the end. Before I fit them I file the angle to suit. I made a little jig from an old holder that fits over the carbon and gets the length and angle spot on, takes 2 mins. The only ones that these do not fit are the slightly wider carbons in the bronze holder.
A set of these in the silver type holders fits lots of different machines and costs about ยฃ2. I have never had any problems using these apart from they last too long!! I can solder up 5 pairs of these into the holders in about 20 mins.
I used to believe that there was quite a difference between carbon brush compositions but over the years I have come to the conclusion that it does not seem to matter too much. But I may be wrong!

Iโve had the same problems with non gen Bosch carbons. I vowed to only fit the gen in future, but…….
I had some non gen on back order that came through today from Maddocks. The tags are different, look much more like the genuine and the brush appears to be laminated.
I will let you know what they are like whenI use them.
Maddocks part number is 12-BS-03 if youโre interested.

Great news and Maddocks are a brilliant company to deal with anyway. But what then is the difference between the part number you mentioned and the ones our aquatic friend has been fitting all this time? (05-BS-03) ๐
Which number should I order?

The earlier carbons with this part number from Maddocks were the same as the other pattern equivelants. I beleive the ones I have just received are a new batch manufactured under a new spec.
