ParticipantI bought a Bosch Classixx fridge freezer model code KGV28V00GB from John Lewis Online in Autumn 2006. It was to replace an old and now failed Bosch fridge freezer which had operated fine in my garage for 12 years +. (Double compressor model).
I suffered exactly the problem that you describe on one of your pages – the Classixx did not come on when the ambient temp was below 5. So all my food kept defrosting during the cold months. I kept thinking one of us must have left the door open …. then the summer came and all was fine. There was even a mention in the manual that you have to turn a switch on inside the fridge to keep the freezer running when the temp falls below a certain level. Same problem happened the next winter. The switch in question is by the fridge interior light and has the interesting side-effect of keeping the switch on all the time!
Needless to say, the problem kept happening.
I have been in correspondence with various levels of John Lewis but they wont accept my complaint that something should have warned me on their website that this would be a problem if I installed the machine in a garage.
Two questions – am I likely to get anywhere, eg via solicitors? And what type of fridge freezer should I replace it with in order for it to run fine in the garage?

The machine is probably absolutely fine, it’s situation will be the problem. Have a read of THIS to find out where you went wrong.

Thanks. Greg – no, the light stop illuminating long ago. I put that down to the fact that, with the override switch set on, (and the bulb lit all the time) the bulb blew after a while.
Is there anything I can do to get Bosch to trade it in against a double-compressor model?

Hi
I wouldn’t think Bosch would entertain that propsal IMHO 😕
The bulb needs to be replaced as it is used to gently warm the fridge interior, in periods of low ambient temperatures.
This will cause the compressor to cycle and thus give feed to the freezer avoiding a meltdown of your food 😉Greg

ParticipantI have this one and it’s not rated for use in outbuildings or garages. If you wanted one like that you should have looked at the tech specifications as it’s in there. The switch your talking about should only be used when putting large amounts of fresh unfrozen food into the freezer, as during warmer months your making the fridge work harder to cool itself down. I bought mine in 2004 and it’s still going strong, bar a couple lightbulbs and a cracked salad draw.
